Soroptimists support children’s education

A ‘chance encounter’ and a subsequent Zoom meeting with the headteacher, Ruth Baldwin, revealed Waterloo Primary School’s educational and social challenges during the Covid pandemic.

Members immediately funded a number of laptops to support children’ home learning. It made a great difference to the children, their families and the staff.

Subsequently the club looked at strengthening links with the school, to support teaching and learning.

As a result, several Soroptimists became volunteer ‘Reading Partners’. They attended training on the current methods and resources that teachers use. This has helped as they share books and stories with the pupils.

To support the school, the club held a successful fund-raising afternoon tea. President Chris presented a cheque for the proceeds to headteacher Ruth Baldwin. This donation was used to buy books for ‘reading for pleasure’.
