Working with Refugees and Asylum Seekers
Four members of SI Derby took a group of women from Upbeat Communities out on a visit to Wirksworth.
Upbeat Communities provides support to refugees in Derby at different stages of their journeys. They address the needs of those newly arrived in the UK, as well as supporting those that have been through the asylum process and have been granted refugee status.
SI Derby arranged a visit to Wirksworth for some of the women who meet at Upbeat. The tour of the town was ably led by member Anne Brawn. The group of women enjoyed the visit enormously. One said after visiting the smallest room in Anne’s house, that she had never been in an ‘English’ house, and another said she had never been in an English church. Of course this spawned lots of ideas for future outings!
We hope to continue to partner with Upbeat communities and organise further outings.
Also to help Upbeat SI Derby took a table at a fundraising banquet organised by the charity. It was a very successful evening, raising over £5000.
