International Women’s Day

We came together to Embrace Equity at this year’s International Women’s Day Club meeting and demonstrated our support for Gender Equality ( UN Sustainable Development Goal 5)  Members in the above photo demonstrated the Embrace Equity pose.

The following words were spoken:

“Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women’s equality. Collectively we can all Embrace Equity.”

To demonstrate the difference between Equality and Equity, members were shown an image with people riding bikes. You can view the image on this link:  https://betterbikeshare.org/2019/10/24/equity-vs-equality/
As a Club, we Embrace Equity through making our meetings accessible to all.  Geographically, our Club catchment area is quite widespread and includes members from Epsom, Dorking, Worcester Park, Wallington and Chessington. Members may not have access to cars or other means of transport but we try to ensure that everyone is able to attend meetings. Lifts are offered by members to meetings. Some of our members are working or have other commitments which means we have to plan meetings at times to suit them. We meet once a month in the evening on Zoom and these alternate between Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We hold Programme Action meetings monthly on Saturdays for project planning at one of our member’s house. This helps to make everyone feel at ease in comfortable surroundings. During the meeting,  Diana went through a UN presentation given by Hilary Ratcliffe OBE at a recent Regional meeting. The presentation clearly outlines how the work of Soroptimists meets the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and that Soroptimists have consultative status at the UN.
