On 25th November 2022, on The International Day For The Elimination of Violence against Women and Girl’s, SI Nottingham began The UN’s 16 days of Activism with an event at The Nottingham Playhouse. The event began with a 2 minute silence to remember the 85 UK women that have been killed by a male perpetrator  since the beginning of January 2022. We heard some shocking statistics around Domestic Violence read by  a member of  The Nottinghamshire Federation of WIs  as well as heard about two of our projects- The Nottingham Trent University Journalism Award and The DV Courts project. The event was attended both The Sheriff of Nottingham Cllr Nicola Heaton &, The Mayor of Nottingham Cllr Wendy Smith.
A special poem was commissioned for the event by Nottingham Poet and Social Activist Cara Thompson called The Meadow Fire & an Art installation (The Orange Meadow) was displayed outside the Theatre consisting of individually crafted, knitted orange flowers.
By Dusk many Nottingham Landmark buildings were lit in Orange to show that Nottingham says NO! to gender based violence.
We will be active on November 25th 2022 at our event in partnership with Nottingham Playhouse and Nottingham Federation of WI.

Two pear trees were planted  in March 2021 in the Community garden at Greens Mill, Sneinton Nottingham. One tree celebrates the 85 anniversary of the Charter of SI Nottingham, the other represents SI Karlsruhe, with which Nottingham City is twinned. You can see our club member Sue planting with the help of the Greens Windmill Gardeners

CHRISTMAS GIVING
Soroptimists in Nottingham made two collections for Women in need on the run up to Christmas. Firstly, a collection of food was passed on to the Charity Prostitute Outreach workers. This will be distributed by the charity to those in need.

Secondly, for women forced by circumstances to spend Christmas in Women’s Refuges, Christmas presents were collected and distributed.

Soroptimists all over the world work together to improve the lives of women and girls.

Here in Nottingham, we do this in a variety of ways with a range of projects which benefit women and girls locally, nationally and internationally.
