Transforming Lives Together Conference

Transforming Lives Together Conference

in

At the Conference at the University of Winchester on Saturday 4 March, as part of the lead in to International Women’s Day, women from across Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset and Surrey gathered at the University of Winchester to learn from a line-up of speakers about how the lives of women and girls are being transformed locally, nationally and internationally. The event threw a spotlight in the run up to International Women’s Day on some of the difficult issues faced by women and girls throughout society and how their lives are transformed and supported at all levels, by authorities, charities and groups like ours. There is always more to do and support of all kinds is needed; donations of items, volunteering activities and lobbying on issues. Following the conference a message was sent to the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Women, Equalities and Early Years to

Since April 2016 SI Poole, together with SI Bournemouth, SI Winchester, assisted by family, neighbours and friends have been knitting baby hats, pullovers, blankets and bootees for the babies of Nepal affected by the earthquakes in April 2015. We have sent these ‘woollies’ by diverse means: by post, via friends, and via a trekking agency identified by SI Winchester. Our efforts were recognised in a presentation given by SI Kathmandu at the SIGBI Conference in Malta. Now, to our great joy, SI Kathmandu have posted on their Facebook page the report of their visit to the Paropakar Maternity Hospital to distribute these items. The photos show SI Kathmandu members, nursing staff, mothers and babies. Can any of you identify items you have knitted? Our project will continue in 2017, when, additionally, we will produce items for premature babies in Poole Hospital, and for elderly care home residents

Since April 2016 members of SI Poole, together with SI Bournemouth, friends and neighbours, have been meeting each month to knit and sew together baby hats, pullovers, blankets and bootees. To date, we have distributed 435 baby hats, 47 blankets, 71 hat & pullover sets, 13 pullovers and 19 pairs of bootees. The photos show the latest batch, unsorted on my kitchen floor, then sorted with help from Jackie de Trafford, SI Poole. It includes donations from SI Winchester, as described in an earlier article, on 8 December 2016.  This batch was given to SI Thames Valley for their Kori project in Sierra Leone. We met up with members of SI Thames Valley on 17 December 2016 to hand over the items – and to have a convivial lunch! Items have been sent to SI Kathmandu, to the Jungle in Calais, and to Poole Hospital as well as

SI clubs Poole and Winchester have already collaborated on knitting hats and baby clothes for Nepal and now are working between regions with SI Thames Valley to send to a maternity hospital in Sierra Leone.  The latest consignment of knitwear from SI Winchester was delivered to Poole last week and money to cover postage is being raised at a coffee morning at a member’s house.

Another consignment of pre-loved bras

Another consignment of pre-loved bras

Si Winchester & District have joined with SI Poole to collect pre-loved bras. The bras are sent to 4 countries in Africa as part of a project to train women in business skills. Each woman gets 100 bras and business training to open a shop. The profit from the sale of those bras is used to buy new stock. When SI Thames Valley heard about the scheme they committed to adding to the consignment.  They currently send pre-loved bras to Kori in Sierra Leone.  They say it is important, not just for the women’s comfort and self esteem,  but because a woman with a bra is less likely to get raped, as someone cares for her, knows about her, to bother to give her a bra.
