Cheese and Wine Afternoon Members and friends of S I St Austell & District met this weekend at Jane and Dave’s home for a Wine and Cheese event. Club member Jane, who is also the Regional Membership Officer of the South West & Channel Islands, organised a wonderful array of cheeses, savouries and relishes along with a wide selection of wines, to raise funds for ‘Mummy’s Star’. A unique charity which gives support to women diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy or within 12 months of giving birth. This ‘summertime’ event was a welcome opportunity to ‘eat, drink and be merry’ whilst enjoying the pretty gardens at Jane and Dave’s home. £350 has been raised so far with donations still coming in. Members are looking forward to welcoming a representative from Mummy’s Star at their October Club meeting, when monies will be presented to the charity.
Soroptimist St Austell and District at St Austell Community Day As a service organisation, SI St Austell were invited by Julian Young, the Town Mayor, to support this year’s community event by providing a cake stall, to help on ‘the human fruit machine game’ and also to help on a craft stall. As always, members came up trumps with an abundance of cakes and bakery items to sell on the day, with proceeds going to the Mayor’s charity, Kernow Young Carers. Colin Hamilton, member Maggie’s husband, who is deputy Mayor, also assisted and contributed to the day. The Club were delighted to be a part of the hugely popular and successful day in the town. Duck Race Olympics on Sunday, 4 August 2024 Great fun on the Pentewan Trail river with some 444 ducks swimming downstream competing for the finishing line! Huge thanks to the Sea Cadets for lending their plastic ducks and to everyone who kindly ‘bought a duck’ which has allowed us to raise £800, plus donations, for the Presidents’ charities, The Cornwall Women’s Centre, The Mermaid Centre and St Petrocs. Great team work from our club members and supporters to run the event either from in the river or from dry land. Some even unexpectedly got their feet wet, retrieving the pesky ducks that tried to get away! Prize winners have been contacted.
