#IWD Positive Periods

Our club textile group has added a project called Positive Periods and has partnered with The Steve Sinnott Foundation’s Positive Periods Project featured below Our Projects | The Steve Sinnott Foundation

Girls miss up to a quarter of their school time, because they do not have the facilities to manage their periods. Our programme teaches educators and students about their menstrual health and how to make their own period pads. This enables teachers to help their students to stay in school, bu understanding the issues and teaching them to make re-usable pads that they can make themselves. They are made using locally sourced materials, affordable, sustainable, reusable and washable, long lasting, comfortable and very importantly, eco-friendly.

This is a sustainable approach to the challenge faced by women and girls all over the world. So far we have run this programme in Sierra Leone, The Gambia and Cuba, which has so far impacted 100,000 women. Each country takes ownership of the programme and runs it in their own unique way that will have maximum impact in that culture.

SI Winchester agreed to make this a donation day on International Women’s Day making a positive difference to women and girls. We will continue to donate for the week of IWD and donate the total amount on 14 March.

£5 pays for one girl to receive full training and all of the sustainable materials she needs to make reusable sanitary towels, so that she will never lack menstrual hygiene products and will not miss school during menstruation. Girls also receive education about sexual health and reproduction during their training sessions. The project is currently operational in The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Cuba and Haiti. Other partners are waiting for the project to commence as this project is very popular and well received.

Members may wish to make donations to show their solidarity and support to girls and women across the globe or may wish to make donations in honour or in memory of strong women who have touched their lives.  Please contact Julie Blackwell on iblackwell1@outlook.com if you wish to send a donation through SI Winchester, or you can donate directly to the Foundation. Those who would like a thank you certificate or would like to acknowledge a strong woman should email some brief details to Helen helenpporter248@gmail.com and Jeni jeni@wearenoisy.co.uk

Thank you for your support & Happy International Women’s Day
