Cooking the Books

A new cookery book has been launched – the result of collaboration between two Soroptimist Clubs in Italy and Crosby.

SI Jesi devised the project and asked SI Crosby members for a selection of recipes that could be included. The two clubs are ‘friendship links‘.

Proceeds from the sale of the book are to support a dedicated safe room that the Italian Soroptimists have opened in the local Carabinieri (Police station) HQ. Known as ‘A Room for You’ it is for women who have been victims of violence or abuse. It provides them with a suitable environment in which to report to the police.

The Italian members have been collaborating locally with a professional institute of hotel hospitality, L’Istituto Professionale di Stato per L’Enogastonomia e L’Ospitalità Alberghiera. The students adopted this cook book as a project, planning to make and serve some of the recipes.

The President of the college and the local Mayor were special guests at the launch event, alongside SI Jesi President Paola Zega.

On the menu for the 4-course dinner were two recipes each from the Jesi and Crosby clubs. Shirley’s Halloumi Fries preceded regional soup and chicken dishes; Reidunn’s Norwegian apple cake rounded off the feast. A quartet of local wines accompanied the courses.

Sharon Ryan, President of SI Crosby ‘attended’ the event online. She later commented: “I took the opportunity to say a few words congratulating them on producing a such a varied, interesting and professional recipe book. I said how much we had enjoyed trying to identify suitable recipes – and wished them a wonderful evening.

“I know that my fellow Soroptimists in Crosby are looking forward to seeing the book – and maybe even tackling some of the Italian recipes. Buon appetito!”
