Being a Soroptimist means being part of an international organisation of women, working for women. We find fun and friendship while working for others.
Soroptimist President Pat Williams was therefore delighted to enrol Vibha Misra as the latest member of SI Crosby.
Vibha has a background in law and property management. She has a keen interest in the rights, dignity and potential of women, and said, “I’m looking forward to learning and giving”. Crosby’s members – particularly her mentor Cynthia Ashworth – gave Vibha a warm welcome and promised many opportunities to be part of club’s initiatives.
‘Learning and giving’ is built into SI Crosby’s ‘Bee Better for Bees’ ongoing project. The club has given wildflower seeds and plants to several schools and community organisations.
At Victoria Park, Crosby, a plaque now marks the bee-friendly garden ‘supported with love and seeds’ by Crosby Soroptimists. Several members visited the park to view the new plaque and the stunning display of wildflowers.
Meanwhile, St Benedict’s RC Primary School, Netherton, has created a Garden of Hope, which includes wildflowers grown from donated seeds. It is a quiet space for children who need some ‘me time’ at troubling moments. Archbishop John Sherrington, recently installed at the Metropolitan Cathedral in Liverpool, blessed the garden and spent the morning with pupils and guests.
‘Learning and giving’ across nations is integral to the Soroptimist vision. Therefore, four Crosby Soroptimists were thrilled to be able to take up a Scandinavian ‘friendship link’ visit invitation to Denmark.
SI Crosby has links with SI Kalundborg in Denmark, SI Falkenberg in Sweden and SI Sigdal in Norway. Meet-ups take place every year or so, with clubs taking turns to host. The Danish Soroptimists were keen to introduce their visitors to many of the landmarks and cultural features of their coastal city – not forgetting the local food!
All this activity – plus the club’s initiative with Liverpool Women’s Hospital – showed new member Vibha that many Soroptimist opportunities for learning and giving await her.
