Crosby Soroptimists have held a successful event focussed on women’s health and wellbeing.
The format took a holistic approach to women’s health. It proved to be an inspiring and informative day, packed with advice, guidance – and fun.
The speakers were Ms Anu Shrotri, Director of Breast Screening and Consultant Breast Oncoplastic Surgeon, Dr Jane Wilkinson, Menopause Specialist and – online – Ginisha Vekaria from Endometriosis UK. All offered clear and accessible information on recognising signs and seeking early help for health issues.
Bestselling author Cathy Cassidy then shared the story of two journeys – firstly how she became an author and secondly how she coped with cancer through the help of her writing. Everyone was deeply moved by her honesty and courage,
After lunch, participants were able to choose from a variety of breakout sessions including yoga, osteoporosis-friendly exercises, mindful writing and drawing, sewing and a sensory nature walk.
Cathy Cassidy led the session on the therapy of writing. Her participants each received a copy of the book “The Stories So Far” generously donated by Bob Stone, owner of the local bookshop Write Blend. Bob had compiled the book for Cancer Awareness Month and included two of her pieces.
Finally, the day was brought to an uplifting close with a performance by the Make Noise choir.
This wellness day was held in collaboration with Liverpool Women’s Hospital Charity. Crosby’s Soroptimists have been supporting the charity’s project to buy a HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy) machine that will serve women throughout the region. Kate Davis (Head of Fundraising at the charity) had previously spoken to members about the HIPEC machine and was on hand at this wellness day to provide an update.
Throughout the months of planning, the Crosby club has been supported by Liverpool and Southport Soroptimists. Together, members designed an event that aligned with the charitable objective of Soroptimist International (GB&I) : advancing health and saving lives. It also enabled everyone to mark International Women’s Day in style.
