For Crosby’s Soroptimists summertime is the time for community service.
This has been a busy time for the Gardening Group (popularly known as the Sow + Sews as they turn to crafting in the winter). Having held a communal ‘plant-up’ event at Victoria Park, members held a ‘plant-out’ session at Lunt Meadows. Spreading the word about the long-term value of pollinator-friendly plants is important to us all. However, all work and no play makes Jill a dull girl – the Sow + Sews know when it’s time to relax.
Once again, Soroptimists were highly visible in the refreshment tent at our local hospice’s annual Garden Party. Soroptimist International Crosby has longstanding links with St Joseph’s Hospice in Thornton. Traditionally the hospice invites the club President to be a judge at the teddy bears’ parade. President Vesna therefore had the unenviable task of scanning the massed teddies (and other soft varieties of toy). It’s the toughest task in the presidential year!
The annual Open Garden at Crosby Hall in Little Crosby also saw Soroptimists out in force. Fine weather brought the crowds. Therefore Club members – whether cashing up in the dining room, clearing up in the outdoor café, selling raffle tickets or stewarding in the garden (or even chatting to stallholders!) – were kept very busy all day.
Funds raise at this event go to support Crosby Hall Educational Trust (CHET). The Club has been of service to CHET since its foundation – and this does not go unnoticed by the Centre. “We are only a small staff team and therefore rely heavily on volunteers to help run our fundraising events. As always, we really could not have managed without … the Crosby Soroptimists who provided so much help and support!”
