Gender Equality

According to UN Secretary-General, António Guterres “achieving gender equality and empowering women and girls is the unfinished business of our time, and the greatest human rights challenge in our world.”

Women and girls represent half of the world’s population and, therefore, also half of its potential. Gender equality, besides being a fundamental human right, is essential to achieve peaceful societies, with full human potential and sustainable development. Moreover, it has been shown that empowering women spurs productivity and economic growth.

This issue is one of the key pillars of our Club’s activity, and in November 2020 we created a special Gender Equality sub group to direct our Club’s actions in this arena.

The first activity on the sub group’s agenda was to foster a greater understanding of gender equality by using the He4She – PWC online Training Course “Building Gender IQ” developed in collaboration with UN Women.

“Awareness is the first step towards building gender equality” and this course helps to address that.  It also poses some interesting questions about how binary gender attribution and stereotypes limit us to “only one half of what it is to be human”.

As a second step our Club is planning to work with Brereton Million on a number of local projects with girls and young women – details of which will be worked out within this sub group and delivered by the Club as a whole.

Further detail will posted as we move forward, but if you’ve seen enough to whet your appetite then get in touch and let’s see what we can do together.
