Welcome to the webpage of Soroptimist International (SI) of Yorkshire, part of a global network of more than 80,000 Soroptimist in 124 countries across the world. Soroptimists work to transform the lives of women and girls through education and empowering and enabling opportunities. We have 20 active clubs in Yorkshire and are the biggest region in the UK.
I would like to share a little about myself. I am from Soroptimist International of Selby, and have been a member since 2008. Becoming a Soroptimist is the best thing I have ever done, my only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner.
My passion is for the programme action work that we undertake locally, nationally and internationall. It is humbling to know that our actions, however small can make such a difference to women and girls worldwide.
I have been the Programme Action lead at my own club and held the job share Regional Chair position for 4 years, prior to becoming Regional President. I have also held the honour of being Selby Club President in 2010-2011 and am currently the UK Programme Action Committee Vice Chair.
I still work part time, as a Health Visitor so the aims of Soroptimism fit really well with my role with clients and their families. This also offers me the opportunity as an active member of the Soroptimist International Yorkshire against Modern Day Slavery (SIYAMS) group to inform our work from professional as well as personal experience.
Being a Soroptimist offers a real opportunity to grow and develop new skills. Our region is full of amazing women who have achieved so much and are pretty awesome. They are also humble and friendly and want to share their experiences and expertise, so there is always something new to learn. Someone inspiring to meet.
The theme for the next year continues to be SIMPLY the 5Ps. These are a way for members to understand the development goals of the United Nation, with whom we have consultative status. They are:-
PEOPLE -To end poverty and hunger
PROSPERITY -To ensure that all human beings can enjoy prosperous and fulfilling lives
PEACE -To foster peaceful and just societies, free from fear and violence
PLANET -To protect the planet
PARTNERSHIP -To work through a revitalised Global Partnership
My hope for the year as I visit clubs is to further support them in their development and programme work and to spread the message loud and wide about the value of being a part of this fantastic organisation.
