With our pre loved fashion bargains Members had a fun visit to  Label at Brampton  to purchase pre loved clothes as part of our fight against Fast Fashion. Members held a coffee morning in Grange on what should have been a busy Saturday but blblical rain reduced the footfall significantly but £230 was raised in aid of our charities including Barrow Women's Centre. Collecting at Cartmel Races for Barrow Women’s Centre July 22nd

Members  joined the volunteers and staff from  Barrow Women's Centre ( Women's Conmmunity Matters) to collect at Cartmel Races. It was a really suvccessful day with over £800 raised from racegoers and it was special as the 2.45 race was the Womens Community Matters Maiden Hurdle. The money collected will be used to further the work of Barrow Women's Centre which provides invaluable help to local women suffering domestic abuse, poverty and other issues.

A lovely warm evening with al fresco supper Members enjoyed an al fresco supper at Oscars in Cartmel, relaxing on a warm summer evening. Being a Soroptimist is fun and we have times when we  are relaxing , although we  do spend a lot of our time  together working to improve the lives of women and girls worldwide. Walk up Brunt Knott June 12th

At the Brunt Knott trig point 427 m On June 12th members of the walking group plus partners enjoyed a lovely walk up Brunt Knott from Staveley. The views from the top were extensive  from Morecambe Bay to the Langdale Pikes and Kentmere fells. There were beautiful meadows of wild flowers, so it was a great way to enjoy the countryside and each others company.  We were blessed with lovely weather particularly in the afternoon and  enjoyed  tea outside  at Wilf's cafe afterwards. Very wet with Meridian Owl by Zoe de L'isle Whiittier 9 members and partners enjoyed a walk from Grizedale to Satterthwaite and Rusland  and returning via Force Falls. The weather was appalling with constant rain but this dd not dampen our spirits and  we had a sociable and interesting walk, enjoying the lovely woods, sculptures, history ( bobbin mills and Arthur Ransomes grave at Rusland church) If you are interested in finding out more about our Club please CONTACT US

Swimathon for ShelterBox 16 March 2024

Swimathon team ready for action! We swam in the Swimathon in Kendal  raising funds for ShelterBox. We  had fun and achieved 112 lengths  swimming in a relay for 55 minutes, raising £557 which with Gift Aid will exceed £600. Afterwards we enjoyed a delicious meal at the home of Club member Sheila. ShelterBox provides vital tools and shelter for families in disaster areas worldwide. Women and children are disproprtionately affected by disasters and we therefore like to support ShelterBox every year. ShelterBox are heavily involved in Gaza and their stocks are very depleted so our donation will help to support families. Club members have swum in the Swimathon  for 38 years and raised funds for ShelterBox sice 2009. The total raised at the Swimathon this year by all teams was £7328 (will be more with Gift Aid) If you want to find out more about

The Address to a Haggis 49 members and guests enjoyed a traditional Burns Supper. Ewen Cameron piped in the haggis and then recited the Address to a Haggis.  Everyone then  tucked into  haggis, neeps and tatties with a wee dram of whisky followed by delicious cranachan. We were delighted that  lots of locals attended to make the evening such a success. After supper were the traditional speeches with The Immortal Memory by Mike Gibbons, who talked about the lyricism of Burns poetry and also included Mozart who was born  around the same time as Burns. Paul Harraway  then  proposed The Toast to the Lassies and Mary Ann Harris replied with good hearted banter.. The evening rounded off rolling pounds  to win a bottle of whisky , and then  singing some traditional Scottish  songs, ending of course with Auld Lang Syne! The Rev Penny Driver  gave

What did Grange Soroptimists do to help needy families at Christmas?

Members donated and  packed 40 Christmas hampers for needy families, and these were distributed  by  the staff of  Barrow Women’s Centre in the run up to Christmas. It was quite an undertaking  purchasing all the items required but well worthwhile. Lots  of members were involved  fundraising, purchasing items, collecting donations, covering boxes and then packing the hampers The Club was really grateful  to pupils of Kirkbie Kendal school, Kath Horsfall for the eggs and Fletchers for their help providing boxes.
