Line Dancing!

Apologies for the large line dancer in the foreground but Dishi did have a lovely session!  Sylvia had borrowed glitzy hats for everyone and the tutor taught two dances.  The Brownies were able to achieve their dance badge by taking part in this activity – I don’t think Dishi qualified for hers…maybe next time!

It’s that time of year again!  A bumper collection for the Bower this year as the fine weather brought out the crowds.  Sue, Wendy, David, Gill, Jackie and I helped to count almost £4,000 in small coin and this is the amount that is distributed to organisations and charities that contribute to the day.  Lesley, Mark and Bob were responsible for counting the gate money and record crowds attended in the park too – approximately 38,000 paying visitors!  A wonderful day for Lichfield and a credit to the Bower organisers.

At last, we have been to visit the St Giles Hospice Superstore in Mere Green to present the cheque for £100.  The superstore is a wonderful place where furniture, white goods as well as clothes, jewellery and bric a brac are beautifully displayed to tempt customers!  The site also houses the ebay office which sells the collectible items that are so generously donated.  Well worth a visit especially on days when our very own Club member Jackie Jones is working as part of the volunteer team!

Our presentation evening last night took plave at Chapters Coffee Shop (that also does meals!).  We were delighted to welcome the following: Liz Pritchard on behalf of Young Carers received an allocation of £250 to add to the £250 that we had given during the year. John May of Talking Newspapers received the £500 raised at the quiz night last Saturday. Sylvia Smetham of the St Chad’s 5th Brownies received an allocation of £350 to be drawn on to support particular cases.  We also provide equipment and service when we lead at least 3 sessions per year with this pack. Angela Reynolds in her role as Benevolent Fund Officer for the Region received a cheque for £100. Avril Commons received a cheque on behalf of Breast Cancer for £200, this was in addition to the costs of printing the ‘Click for Mammograms’ cards. Jackie

I was delighted to welcome Valmai Bowden as a new member to our Club.  The induction of a new member is a very proud role for presidents and it was great for her to join at my last formal meeting.  She was not allowed to open her AGM papers until she had been presented with her badge!

Soroptimist Sellout Quiz!! £500 raised!

Soroptimist Sellout Quiz!! £500 raised!

Saturday 7th March saw us at Curborough Community Hall for our quiz in aid of Talking Newspapers.  Angela (pictured with her thank you gift) was Quiz Mistress and Dishi on the scoreboard.  It was a fabulous night with lots of local and regional clubs support.  Supper was served after 5 rounds and the speed and efficiency of it all was favourably commented on.  Then back to the next 5 rounds and the winning team – Human Google winning by a margin of 4 points. As if that was not enough, the evening raised £500 for Talking Newspapers so thank you to everyone who came and made it such a fun evening.  To Bilston Club who were given duff information (so they went for a meal instead) I can only apologise.  To John May’s party, who I neglected to tell about ‘bring your own drinks’, I can only

Once again the Lichfield Gazette has done St Chad’s Brownies and Lichfield Soroptimists proud!!  A lovely photo and article that acknowledges the evening led by the Mayor, Cllr. Mark Warfield so that the girls could achieve their science badge.  Soroptimists are committed to leading at least one evening each term and were delighted that Mark accepted their invitation to this evening.  Look out for the Mothers Day cooking evening in March!!

Shrove Tuesday Races

Shrove Tuesday Races

Well, the Attwoods had word that this might well be the last Pancake Race Event in Lichfield, so we went to watch.  Crowds were large, a lovely atmosphere, The Mayor led the proceedings (but didn’t race)  and all was well.  We bumped into fellow Soroptimists Valmai and Kate who had chanced upon the event.  Chaplin was intrigued by the whole thing as were the Italians who seemed to be out in force and believed that somehow winning was the important aspect of all this!  I heard of some Stourbridgians chancing on a black pudding festival in France and they found that equally bizarre!  Long live the traditions!!!
