‘A Soroptimist is ….. And this is how we Stand up for Women’
Welcome to the website of Soroptimist International North West England and the Isle of Man.
My name is Rosemary Hoyle and I am a member of the Grange-over-Sands club. I have been a Soroptimist for 13 years and have found that it has given so many opportunities to travel, meet new people and do something useful for other people together with my friends, both in SI Grange, the other clubs in our Region, as well as clubs nationally and internationally. I have been secretary of both my own club and the North West Region and am now very honoured to become Regional President for the coming year.
Soroptimist International is a global organisation that has consultative status at the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at the United Nations (UN), which gives us a voice on important discussion papers, and allows us to attend the Commission on the Status of Women in New York each March, and contribute to the “Agreed Conclusions”. This status would not be possible without the fantastic work being done by our Members. Soroptimist International (SI) has four Federations: SI The Americas, SI Europe, SI South West Pacific and SI Great Britain and Ireland. There will shortly be a firth Federation for Africa.
Soroptimist International Great Britain and Ireland (SIGBI) has 7000 Members in 320 Clubs in 29 countries including Great Britain, Ireland and countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Malta, who work at a local, national and international level to educate, empower and enable opportunities for women and girls.
Our Region covers northern Lancashire and southern Cumbria and holds three meetings throughout the year, in February, June and November, with various social events and occasional workshops. As well as upholding our commitment to educate, empower and enable women to attain their full potential, we also have fun and enjoy friendship with other like-minded women.
We hold an annual Federation Conference in a different venue each year, where we enjoy meeting friends and hearing some really inspirational speakers and also listening to what our clubs in other parts of our Federation are doing. In 2020 the Federation Conference will be held in Belfast at the end of October.
