‘Bras and bubbly’ event – ‘supporting’ a worthy cause!
Members and a few potential new members joined together for a fun social occasion with a serious message, one warm evening in July. Great conversation, laughter and discussion of our on going projects was shared over a glass or two of bubbly in Penny’s lovely garden.
Then down to the slightly more serious task – bras – 400 of them to be exact – had been donated by generous local women from choirs, dance classes, yoga groups, the women’s refuge and our collection box at the Five Rivers Heath and Wellbeing Centre. We sorted, counted and packed the bras up ready for onward transport.
All the donated bras will go to ‘Smalls for All’, a Scottish Charity which collects and distributes underwear to help women and children in Africa. The charity helps those living in orphanages, slums, refugee camps and schools, as well as providing underwear to hospitals to help those suffering from medical conditions like obstetric fistula.
Penny Joyce, who hosted the event, said afterwards: “We were delighted with the response from generous local women. The simple act of wearing a bra gives women in Africa personal dignity and gains respect from others. Alongside the serious issue of sorting the donations, we had a fun social occasion together, getting to know each other better and welcoming others with an interest in our new group.”
Thanks to Penny for hosting, to Teresa for helping to organise, to Jane for donating the bubbly, to Vicky for organising the collection box – what a team! And thanks to all who attended too.
