In 2013, our club celebrated 60 years of active Soroptimism in Southend.
Our Charter was given to us in October 1953, so in October 2013, we held a weekend of events. Look at our Souvenir Programme for details. 60th souvenir programme
Members of the club enjoyed hosting guests from our Friendship Links clubs across the world to take part in our celebrations!
Almost a hundred people gathered for lunch at the Cliffs Pavilion on Sunday to celebrate and were joined by David Amess MP, who spoke about the valuable work done by Soroptimists and by Rebecca Harris MP, who also supports our work. Also present was the Soroptimist Federation President, Pat Black, who had travelled from Edinburgh for the celebration.
The Southend club has links with clubs across the world and as well as members, past members and friends, including members from other London Anglia Region clubs, there were guests from Liege in Belgium and Korijama in Japan.
Club President Sharon Spivey said, “It’s amazing that the Southend club has been here all this time. We have a good club; lively, friendly members who work hard to promote women’s rights and make the world a better place for women and girls. It’s been a great weekend – our guests have seen Southend and Old Leigh and have really enjoyed themselves. They’ve been delighted with the warm welcome given by Southend Soroptimists.”
