Thanks to the generosity of the Abbey Theatre in St Albans, Soroptimist International St Albans and District were proud to co-host the charity night’s performance of the fabulous play, Steel Magnolias, on Thu 29 Feb. Our partner host was the Hertfordshire Federation of Women’s Institutes. The play’s run is to 9 March www.abbeytheatre.org.uk which appropriately takes in International Women’s Day on 8 March.
Soroptimists were raising money for SAHWR, the local women’s refuge service, plus other charities supported by the Club. The event raised an incredible £1630.40!!
There was a fundraising raffle on the night and a bucket collection at the end of the evening after Soroptimist co-President Barbara Saunders (pictured here) had thanked the audience and the theatre for their support and spoken about the funding shortfall faced by the Refuge. Soroptimists were completely blown away by the generosity of everyone who came – thank you so much!
The news item made it into the Herts Advertiser too – please see the clipping from the newspaper here.
Steel Magnolias by Robert Harling:
Truvy’s salon is at the heart of Chinquapin, Louisiana. As the characters of the small town come and go through its doors, the beauty and complexity of their daily lives in the Deep South unfold. Secrets and joys are shared over shampoo and manicures as the women of Chinquapin show their strength and their love for each other – and themselves.
Filled with wit and smart repartee, the play takes us on a journey from the joy of engagements and childbirth to the tragic mortality of life.
Steel Magnolias celebrates the power of friends, families and resilience in the face of adversity.
