Violence Against Women (Local and National)

Working to eliminate VAWG in all its forms, including domestic abuse, modern day slavery and FGM. Work links to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 4 (quality education), 5 (gender equality) and 10 (reducing inequalities) and includes:

  • Hosting a free national conference at Bournemouth University on June 29, 2023 to bring together professionals and interested parties to seek solutions- ‘Violence Against Women and Girls: Social Justice in Action’
  • Undertaking Court Observations (part of a national project where members observed court proceedings at trials in cases of domestic abuse to collect data about the women’s experience of the justice system; the final report is awaited in spring 2023)
  • Engaging in the SI ‘Orange’ initiative to raise awareness about violence against women and girls monthly on the 25th; we are currently working with BCP Council with plans to mark the annual day on November 25th as part of #16DaysofActivism
  • Supporting the Women’s Refuge (Friends of the Bournemouth Refuge) and taking care of the SARC garden
  • Identifying periodic projects in relevant areas e.g. recognising bias in young children, Domestic Abuse in Dorset Research, coercive control training, other areas identified through in-year research
