A beautiful embroidered wall hanging was presented to new President of S I Cannock & District Janis Lomas at the AGM on 15th April. Soroptimist Lynne Tuckley designed and made the framed embroidery to celebrate the 60th anniversary year of the club in Cannock. It has the new Soroptimist emblem, launched just over two years ahead. President Janis and club members were delighted with it and will have it on display at their meetings during the year. 10 years ago Lynne and another club member, June Ward, embroidered a cloth to celebrate the club’s 50th year – that has on it the names of all members at the time.
The excitement of the gift and the 60th year was tinged with sadness when members heard that their friend June Ward, a member of SI Cannock & District for 37 years, had died following a fairly long illness. June had been a well loved member of the club, always there to help with anything and a particularly caring person. She had taught dressmaking and also ad a long career as a teacher of children and young people with learning difficulties. June will be missed by everyone in the Cannock club.
In her opening words to the club President Janis outlined her hopes and ideas for the year. She and a small team have arranged some exciting and fun events for members and friends throughout the year. Her focus for awareness and fund raising will be on women victims of domestic violence, in particular the club will be supporting Staffordshire Women’s Aid and Pathway. Two fund raising events have been arranged: on June 12th at the Barns Lesley Smith of Tutbury Castle will be Mary Queen of Scots. Tickets are £18.50 and include a two course meal.
On Sunday 13th July at Ingestre, Notty Hornblower of The Hope Costume Museum, Derby, will present a cavalcade of fashions [all originals] from the last 60 years. Guests will be welcomed by a glass of bubbly and will enjoy a scrumptious afternoon tea. Tickets for this event are £22.00.
