Cannock Soroptimists supported the Meru Women’s Garden Project by holding an Open Garden weekend on one of the sunniest, warmest weekends we’ve had this year. Around 40 people went along to each of the events, hosted by June Bould, President of SI Cannock and Soroptimist Maggie Shore. Everyone admired their beautiful gardens whilst enjoying tea, cakes, boules and croquet. There was a lot of fun and laughter, everyone enjoying each other’s company.
Meru Women’s Garden Project is supported by all clubs in the Federation of Great Britain and Ireland and is in its third and final year. In Partnership with Child.org, women of Meru County, Kenya, will be educated, empowered and enabled to create their own employment through growing and selling their crops or to take on training and mentoring roles within their communities. Additionally, girls and boys will receive training opportunities to promote staying in school, health education and the alternative rite of passage to FGM.
At the end of Sunday’s open garden event President June was delighted to tell everyone that they had raised £500 for the project; she also thanked everyone for their help in organising the weekend, in particular all of those who had baked cakes and also her and Maggie’s husbands and many members of Cannock Rotary Club who had supported so well.
Soroptimists will be in Cannock town centre on Friday September 28th to promote some of their local projects such as provision of sanitary items and toiletries to those in need and will also be available to talk to any woman interested in joining them in their project work. Soroptimists are still asking anyone who can, to sign their petition: Petition: Provide free sanitary products to young women receiving free school meals which can be found via their web-site or on the Government petition website.
