February 2015 A Plan

February 2015 A Plan

OUR PRESIDENT ELECT PUTS THE IDEA TO CLUB AND I HATCH A PLAN. I’ve never done VSO, this might be my chance to do a mini version.   My New Year’s resolution is to do things now rather than wait until I retire. I contact Gordon from Friends of Sick Children in Malawi to explore whether it is feasible.    I’m a pharmacist so my plan is to help in the dispensary of the hospital pharmacy.    My luggage allowance is 2 x 23kg plus 12kg for cabin so maybe I could use some of it to take supplies out. He puts me in touch with various people in Blantyre at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital and the Nursing School.    Email doesn’t seem to be easy; I either get a reply straight away or not at all.   It’s not helped by emails disappearing into my spam box, which

OUR PRESIDENT ELECT SOWS THESEED OF AN IDEA FOR BOTH OF US. We’ve hit our target of £2000 in one year instead of two to train a paediatric nurse, and at the dinner meeting I enjoy the update from Alexis and Gordon Cowie, trustees of the charity Friends of Sick Children in Malawi (www.friendsofsickchildreninmalawi.org). I’m really impressed with the work being done, not least with the information that 99.7pence in every pound goes directly to the projects we have sponsored.    It’s always great to hear about the paediatric nurses we have supported, we began back in 2013 and the reports have encouraged Club and successive Presidents to continue this as our International charity. President Elect Elaine whispers to me ‘wouldn’t it be great to actually go out there’.   I agree – it’s an interesting idea but am I up for this? Dave, my husband, decides

Forgotten 10 Challenge

Forgotten 10 Challenge

SI Kenilworth took part in Handicap International’s Forgotten 10 Challenge by entering a tree in St Nicholas’ Church Christmas Tree Festival at the beginning of December. We were raising awareness of the continues use of landmines and the effects on the communities that still have to live in the areas where landmines are left. We decorated the tree with pictures of the work Handicap International carries out to help these communities, and left information for the visiting public to take away. On Saturday 29th September we met with members of our friendship link SI Cardiff and District, and 140 other Soroptimists and friends from the Midlands to plant 5000 daffodil and crocus bulbs in the War Widow’s Wood. After the digging and planting we enjoyed a tour of the Arboretum and visited the Sorptimist’s garden, stopping for a well earned lunch before travelling home. A great day was enjoyed by all, we made some new friends and are looking forward to a return visit to enjoy the flowers.

Selling bedding plants in the rain!

Selling bedding plants in the rain!

….for the rain, it raineth every day…. or it seems to every time we have a plant sale. It was no different this year as we prepared our stand at the Lion’s Show. Yet, thanks to our two gazebos we weathered the storm. Coffee and donuts kept us cheerful throughout the morning, despite the rain, as we set out our many bedding plants (kindly donated by Bordon Hill Nurseries, thanks to Andrea) alongside some fine examples of Carole N’s wooden craftwork and a display of typical, non-perishable foodstuffs that will be used by the Kenilworth Foodbank to make up one of their food parcels.  Then, just as the Carnival Queen, escorted by a cavalcade of classic cars, entered Abbey Fields and this year’s Mayor, Cllr. George Illingworth, declared the Show open, the rain stopped and the townsfolk descended on us. We had a successful afternoon,
