108 Women Killed by Men in One Year

From January 2022 until December 2022, 108 women were killed by men. Here are the stories of six of those women.

 Zara Aleena

Aspiring lawyer Zara Aleena, 35, was murdered by Jordan McSweeney, 29, on June 26th, 2022 while walking home.  McSweeney pleaded guilty and was jailed  for 38 years.  Zara’s family describe her as “someone who believed that a woman should be able to walk home.  They added that ‘She had a strong sense of justice and fairness,” which “led her to a life of giving and caring for others.”

Zara’s murder attracted attention after it was discovered McSweeney had committed numerous other offences and should have been recalled to prison. CCTV footage recovered from that night reveals the prolific criminal trailed other lone women before singling out and killing one he had never met before. Just after 02.30 on 26 June, Zara was found on a pavement not far from her home, in Ilford.

Her belongings were strewn along Cranbrook Road. She had been badly beaten, was partially naked and struggling to breathe. Another woman gave the 35 year old CPR until paramedics arrived. Zara died later that morning in hospital.

On Friday 3rd November 2023, McSweeney’s sentence was reduced by five years after appeal. Zara’s aunt, Farah Naz spoke on behalf of the family saying,

In the wake of this decision, we choose to relegate this man to obscurity, hoping that society forgets him as a meaningless and despicable individual. Our focus now lies elsewhere. Zara, a beacon of hope, a symbol of change. Her tragic murder stands as a catalyst for reshaping how society safeguards women.
