Optimistic Objectives is the result of a unique collaboration between Warwick Law School and Soroptimist International of Kenilworth & District. It is the product of a symposium held at the University of Warwick, England, in June 2010, at which scholars from the Law School shared their research with an audience of Soroptimists, whose own expertise and insights in turn threw new and unexpected light upon current academic debate.
Structured around the 10 International Objectives adopted at the SI Conference in Glasgow, 2007, the topics ranged from domestic violence to international genocide, from the subtle pressures which control women’s healthcare choices here in the UK to the overt problems they face in Afghanistan, and from gender awareness in the Indian judicial process to women’s role in meeting the challenges of climate change.
The resulting papers, brought together as Optimistic Objectives, cover a broad and fascinating range of issues and will be of relevance not only to Soroptimists but also to academics and to anybody with an interest in issues of gender and the law.
The long-term project “Soroptimists for Education and Leadership”, to be officially launched at the SI Convention in Montreal, 2011, is “all about clubs and the work that they do, and gaining a worldwide perspective to see SI’s collaborative global impact,” and Optimistic Objectives was planned with just these aims in mind.
Professor Rebecca Probert, current President of Soroptimist International of Kenilworth & District and editor of the collection, intends to publicize Optimistic Objectives as widely as possible within both Soroptimism and academia, “to bring the work and objectives of Soroptimist International to a wider audience, and to help make Soroptimists around the globe aware of the state of current academic research into a wide variety of relevant areas.”
Takeaway Press, which published Optimistic Objectives, is making the hardback edition available to Soroptimists and academics at £14.99, including free P&P within the UK and EU. Takeaway Press has also committed to donating a minimum of 25% of the profits from worldwide sales of the book to SI charities.
