SI Lichfield & District Membership Officer Louie Clegg is a passionate advocate for Soroptimism and is always on the lookout for opportunities to promote our Club to potential new members. She’s absolutely certain that membership is the heart of our club here at SI Lichfield & District…but why is that? Over to Louie…

Today is World Tsunami Awareness Day. According to the UN by the year 2030, an estimated 50 per cent of the world’s population will live in coastal areas exposed to flooding, storms and tsunamis. For this World Tsunami Awareness Day, Club President Jenny McLelland reflects on her personal and very close up experiences of the 2004 tsunami in Thailand.

Every 45 minutes someone dies of breast cancer in the UK. Stop and think about that for a moment – it’s staggering. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and at SI Lichfield & District we’ve been thinking hard about a disease that causes over 12,000 deaths a year of women (and men) we love…and listening to survivors’ stories from our own club members…

What is World Teachers’ Day 2020? Well, it celebrates great teachers worldwide. It shines a light on their massive contribution and achievements despite over-extended education systems and limited resources. They are key if we are to have any chance of achieving the UN’s SDG 4 Education – Leaving no-one behind.

Member of our Planet Sub Group Karen Whitworth has been investigating sustainable fashion – the future of fashion and its environmental impacts. She writes…I am currently undertaking a Future Learn online course entitled “Fashion’s Future and the SDGs” (United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals) as I am interested to build on my knowledge of the environmental impacts of the various processes involved in clothing production and what the fashion industry is doing to reduce, or eradicate them. A short assignment was part of my recent learning and I thought other Soroptimists may be interested in what I have found.

Being an organisation for empowering women I thought this was right up our street an International day in the Calendar for women … Women’s Health & Fitness Day – 30th September 2020. So looking to do a little research to promote this day I found myself a little disappointed, most links pointed in the direction of US based sites, and those that did link to the U.K. were linked to magazine subscriptions or pregnancy related. Perhaps that says something about internet algorithms and how they see my persona, even NHS links were very restricted to diet or again pregnancy, with a few to cancer.

Club Programme Action lead Christine Corless updates us on the activity of our thriving and incredibly productive sewing bee whose impressive output has made a real and measurable difference to the lives of girls in Africa and Nepal.

On Unesco’s International Literacy Day – 8th September 2020 – it’s time to find out! When this international awareness day popped up in SI Lichfield and District Social Media Calendar, what else could we do than turn to our very own Author in Residence… SI Lichfield and District founder member Julia Pinner, whose book – “Gyorgy. A Teenage Hungarian Freedom Fighter’s Story” by Gyorgy Nadasdy and Julia Pinner, was published in September 2016.

SI Lichfield & District member Nichola Balmer, leads the Club’s Planet sub group. She’s also a trained volunteer ambassador for the Waste Savvy Staffs project and available as an online speaker. Here she muses on cling film (as you do…)
