Rose Bowl Competition Event – 2016

The Rose Bowl event took place at Cabus Village Hall on Thursday 19th May.

For the Rose Bowl competition this year President Margaret had set the challenge to each club to produce a sensory cushion for dementia sufferers. Club members were then invited to a fun evening to judge the results of the work clubs had put in over the last couple of months. Seventy five members from across the Region came along to join in the fun, bringing with them thirteen completed cushions.

The cushions were very colourful and came in all shapes and sizes with themes varying from animals and flowers to memories. Each club was asked to vote for their favourite cushions putting them in 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. This was not an easy task because all the entries were extremely good but everyone inspected all the cushions enthusiastically before coming to a decision and putting their club’s voting slip in the secret ballot box.

Of course, as always food comes into the event somewhere and after the voting took place we all enjoyed a hotpot supper and a glass of wine. Following supper the fun part of the evening began with entertainment provided by members from the Preston and Blackburn clubs. First up were the cast of Snow White, seven ladies sitting in a row with their costumes consisting of a mirror and six various items of headwear! The following witty and concise performance of the story of Snow White was very much enjoyed by the audience. Next up were some ‘Ladies Looking for Love’ who came on stage dressed in floppy hats along with masked models of their favourite men. They then entertained us with their very funny rendition about the search for a man to the tune of All Things Bright and Beautiful. The final act was eleven ladies each holding a letter for SOROPTIMIST and singing about being a Soroptimist to the tune of YMCA.

We all enjoyed a really good evening, the raffle raised £218 for P.I.E.S. and thirteen dementia patients will benefit from the cushions in the future. President Margaret was thrilled that her idea of the cushions had enthused the members and culminated in this very successful evening. The winning club will be announced and presented with the Rose Bowl at the Regional Lunch in June.
