As you can probably guess – SEO is not a word which has featured highly in the work of Soroptimists around our region, up till now that is!
Rachel is passionate about her chosen topic of Search Engine Optimisation (or Search Engine Optimization if you want to use a different spell checker) and being a Soroptimist herself means that she also relates the work to the things we do and the systems we use.
So we had some great discussions on what SEO and Content Marketing are, and just what a blog really is (which wasn’t obvious when the system we use doesn’t actually mention the word Blog at all!) Why should we do SEO, what can we gain from it? Well, quite a lot – we learned that following a few simple rules can have a big impact on how search engines view and handle our websites, and it is defintely worth having a go.
We also learned how to write a good blog post (so if this isn’t a good one, blame me for not listening properly ….) and how to optimise it.
We looked at lots of practical examples and some useful resources, and managed a brief look at how to promote blog posts using social media.
I think we all came away very enthused and ready to give it a go. So when we are doing what we all do well as Soroptimists – raising awareness of womens’ issues, supporting local refuges and food banks, collecting supplies for women in custody suites, protecting and advancing the lives women and girls around the world, and generally making a difference – we just need to go one step further in publicising it more effectively. SEO here we come….
