Meeting 16th November 2020

in

Great meeting tonight with lots of programme action discussed.  Smellies for the Sick had toiletry donations they wanted to give to us and we donated items to Street Spirit for the homeless. Southend YMCA, one of our partner organisations, want to construct a quilt with squares made by people from Southend to represent what  2020 had been like for them.  The quilt would then be displayed in the town.Having decided that the club would make some squares, Sharon R immediately started designing! We were delighted that Mel, our regional president, was able to join us and participate in the meeting.

What Do We Do?

What do we do? We are an international women’s charity working to improve the lives of women & girls. Have you ever wondered what we do to achieve that aim and how we do it? 2021 will be our centenary year so Soroptimists have been a well kept secret for almost 100 years. To find out what we do and how we operate, click on the link below to read a brilliant blog by Rachel Weinhold from SI Rossendale. https://sigbi.org/2020/what-do-soroptimists-do-our-positioning-statement/

Zoom Meeting First ever regional meeting on Zoom.  About 48 of us from around the region joined in. There was a number of members who had never been to a regional meeting before so it was great to have them participate. Very good presentations on the SIGBI Benevolent Fund and also the Suffolk Women’s Voices Quilt. The quilt is a project from 2018 to mark the centenary celebrations of women’s suffrage. Further information on the meeting will be available on the London Anglia Region website https://sigbi.org/london-anglia/

Toiletry Items This photo shows the toiletry items we pack into bags for the Southend and Basildon women’s refuges. Southend Soroptimists have been supporting the refuges with these bags for many years. The incidence of domestic abuse has rocketed during the Covid19 lockdown so these donations are more important than ever. Lots of volunteering & fundraising opportunities! It is hoped that we can have a joint intergenerational project with last year’s charity Southend YMCA and Age Concern Southend.
