During and after reporting a crime, it is so important for victims to be understood and to understand what is happening and what will happen next.
As a victim of crime, you have the right to have details of the crime recorded by the police as soon as possible after the incident.
If you choose to report a crime, right three of the #VictimsCode ensures that you’re always provided with information. This might be information about the process, who to contact for support, or info on Restorative Justice services.
Vulnerable or intimidated victims & witnesses can ask for #SpecialMeasures to be used during the trial to help them give their best evidence in court. Under the Victims’ Code, you have the right to have your needs assessed to see whether you are eligible for SM #VictimsRights
Right 5: Where eligible, you have the right to be told about how to claim compensation for any loss, damage or injury caused as a result of crime.
You have the right to be told by the police when key decisions are made and, where applicable, to have the reasons explained to you within 5 working days.
Right 7: A VPS gives victims a voice in proceedings. It offers victims the opportunity to express – in their own words – how the crime affected them. It will be considered by the court when deciding upon an appropriate sentence.
Having to attend court can be a worrying experience for victims. Under the Victims’ Code, you have the right to be given information about the trial, the trial process and your role as a witness. The Witness Care Unit can also offer practical guidance and advice.
Under the Victims’ Code, victims of crime have the right to be given information about the outcome of the case and any appeals. If the defendant is convicted, you have the right to be given an explanation of the sentence.
If your property is taken as evidence it must be returned as quickly as possible. If you attend court, you will be eligible for expenses.
