Hair Razor for Tap Twinning

Hair Razor for Tap Twinning

in Tags
On 19th October members and guests enjoyed an evening with a difference presented by our member Jeanette who has a wealth of experience in hairdressing. Hair Razor was a celebration of hairdressing and Jeanette demonstrated  different styles and techniques and talked about her experiences including the great value of apprenticeships.  The audience was entertained, sitting  back in a relaxed atmosphere with a glass of prosecco looking  back at styles from  the past and current techniques, presented in a fun way. The models sitting on stage  reading Cumbria Life added a feeling of actually being in a salon! £355 was raised for our charities which this year include Tap Twinning when we will twin a tap in Cartmel Village Hall with one in a developing country. Fast Fashion has a massive environmental impact. At the Clothes swap on Thursday 26 May  members and guests learnt about  the impact of Fast Fashion and had a great opportunity to take home some quality second hand clothes. There waas a quiz about the impact of Fast Fashion and an excellent talk and advice by Windermere stylist Carole Greenland Stylist Carol giving advice Did you know --- The textile industry is second only to oil as the world's biggest polluter Of the 8 million tonnes of plastic in the ocean the second largest amount comes directly from our clothes 11 million tonnes if textile waste is created each year Only 1% of clothing is recycled If we extended the use of our clothes by 9 months it would reduce the carbon, water and waste footprint by 20 - 30% If you would like more information

At the Slavery Memorial in Lancaster It was great to host  Joanna Pollard on her 91 mile Fair trade walk from Garstang to Keswick and walk with her on the 2 legs between Lancaster and Kendal. The project Chocolate Has A Name is raising funds to set up Chocolate making workshops for children of cocoa farmers in Ghana. This will help keep girls in school, reduce the chance of child marriage and give them skills to enable them to develop a career using cocoa produced by their family. A great project for Soroptimists to support. Please support Joanna's  crowdfunder  for Chocolate making workshops in Ghana   If you are interested in finding out more about our work  or would like to join our club please contact us Images by kind permission of Joanna Pollard

Ready for action A fantastic day at Cartmel races  on 31st May  with the amazing staff and volunteers from Barrow Women's Centre collecting from the generous public. A staggering final total of £1436 was raised during the day. More than ever women are in need in Barrow so it was great to be able to help and have fun. We were helped out by the trainer J.J.O'Shea who donated some of his winnings when his horse Envious Editor won! Some of the staff judged the best turned out horse for the last race!

Walk Cartmel to Bigland April 13th 2022

Six  members plus 2 partners enjoyed a walk from Cartmel to Bigland Tarn and back. Unfortunately the spectacular views usually seen from Howbarrow and Bigland were shrouded in mist, but the beautiful wildflowers incuding primroses, cowslips, marsh marigolds, wild daffodils, bluebells, wood anenomes and wood sorrell more than made up for it and everyone learnt something new about birds, trees and flowers.   There was ample time to chat  and the walk rounded off with a drink at the pub!
