Kenilworth Community in Action Day

Kenilworth Community in Action Day

in

Kenilworth Community In Action Day was held on Saturday 10th February at the Methodist Church, Priory Road. Kenilworth Soroptimists took part in the displays by Kenilworth’s voluntary groups. The general public were admitted intothe afternoon session which also included a guest speaker and talks. One of our attendees commented: “The Soroptimist stand was eye catching, and a number of younger women stopped, and were interested to hear about the work which the club does locally, nationally, and internationally.  The hall was packed with stands from 29 other voluntary groups, so this was a good opportunity for positive publicity about our club”.

Women’s Refuge Talk

Women’s Refuge Talk

We had a speaker from the Warwickshire Women’s Refuge at our February business meeting. It was a good talk with chilling statistics and the situation does not look to get any better for a long long time to come. Happily our very generous minded Club is continuing to do our bit and this will begin with the collection of items at the March Business meeting. Kenilworth Soroptimists are committed to supporting the refuge in raising the morale of the Residents and their children and creating some semblance of normality in their troubles.

Our club is supporting the Fawcett Society #OurTimeNow by tweeting a picture of a clock face on our twitter account on 6th February. The campaign aims to break down barriers to gender equality. To find out more about this gesture of support which is indeed supported by, among others, Helen Pankhurst the great grand daughter of Emmeline, see the website: https://www.fawcettsociety.org.uk/ourtimenow

Burn’s Night Dinner

Burn’s Night Dinner

On the 25th January, club members and some soropmisters celebrated Burn’s Night. We had music (bagpipes of course) while the haggis was paraded around the diners before being addressed with great humour by the club secretary. After the traditional meal, there was more entertainment: poetry by Burns, some Scottish tales, and a Toast to the Lassies, when we discovered what a lad Robert Burns had been as far as his women were concerned. In the response to the Toast, we concluded that for all their faults, we would rather not do without the laddies. Two versions of Auld Lang Syne were recited: one in the vernacular, and the English translation, after which everyone sang it with great enthusiasm. A very enjoyable time was had by all, and the organisers are to be congratulated on a great evening.

Midwife Led Birthing Unit

Thanks to the generosity of the general public who gave us donations for tea and coffee at last year’s Castle Medical Centre flu clinics, we were able to donate £225 towards the new Midwife Led Birthing Unit at Warwick Hospital. Anna Jackson came to tell us how the work is progressing, sounds like it will be an amazing facility. Many of us felt almost a sense of regret that our baby days are passed – but very impressed at what will be on offer soon.

SI Kenilworth International Night 2017

SI Kenilworth International Night 2017

SI Kenilworth recently celebrated a fabulous and action packed International Night with a wonderful group of women. We welcomed new member Fran into our Club, celebrated our 7 Friendship links and wore orange as part of the UN Action to End Violence against Women and Girls. We were delighted to welcome Sue Beech (SI Coventry) Mary Lloyd (SI Rugby) and Jan Bowden (President of MAR) who joined us for the evening. Our speaker was Katy Berry who told us about the importance  of re-usable sanitary products in such countries as Malawi and India. Club members brought so many pairs of ‘big knickers’ to enable girls not to miss days of schooling that we filled two enormous carrier bags!
