Context – The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that starts on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and runs until December 10, Human Rights Day.
This period serves as a powerful call to action to end violence against women and girls, in all its forms, around the world. The campaign aims to raise awareness, mobilize diverse groups, and foster a united front to combat gender-based violence in all its forms.
The urgency for collective action is underscored by staggering statistics and reports highlighting the prevalence of gender-based violence globally.
According to UN Women, one in three women worldwide has experienced physical or sexual violence, predominantly by an intimate partner. This pervasive issue not only threatens the well being and dignity of women and girls but also hampers social and economic development, perpetuating cycles of poverty and inequality. Addressing gender-based violence requires a multifaceted approach that includes prevention, protection, and prosecution.
The focus for our 2025 campaign is preventing online violence and creating safer online spaces — including raising awareness of how online abuse happens, sharing tools for digital safety and support, and encouraging actions that help create safer, more respectful online spaces.
