Members of Soroptimist International St Albans and District have had a really busy week!
On Mon 28 Feb Members enjoyed a social evening together “Shwopping” raising more than £80 for the Club’s charities. Members and friends swapped unwanted Christmas gifts and clothes and made a donation for their newly swapped acquisitions. The evening was fun and a good opportunity for people to get to know each other better in an informal setting. We hadn’t held one of these events since 2014 and everyone agreed it should be a regular event in the Club’s social calendar! Thanks must got to President Barbara for being such a great host.
On Tue 1 Mar it was the Home-Start Pancake Race in St Albans. Four Soroptimists were able to help on the day – pictured here (l to r) are Kat Clark, Melie Tant and Debbie Tankard. It was great that the event went ahead this year – after being cancelled in 2021 due to COVID.
As soon as we find out how much money was raised for HomeStart Herts we will post it here.

On Fri 4 Mar St Albans Soroptimists Barbara Saunders and Jane Slatter were delighted to attend the St Albans Girls’ School International Women’s Day Inspiring Women Careers Event for Year 8 and Year 12 Students. Jane and Barbara are pictured here in front of the hall where the event took place. These girls all have a great future – they certainly inspired us and we hope we helped to inspire them! Soroptimists have been participating in this annual event since it’s inception. The event was not held in 2021 and was one of the last events in 2020 before the COVID lockdown, so it was great to be back seeing the girls, staff and other participants face to face again!
On Tuesday 8 March – International Women’s Day itself – Radio Verulam 92.6 FM broadcast 2 interviews with St Albans Soroptimists Louise Marron and Jane Slatter. Louise was interviewed by Nick Hazell for the Morning show and Jane Slatter was interviewed by Steve Simpson for the Drive Time show.
Jane Slatter was interviewed more generally about International Women’s Day and the theme for 2022 #BreakTheBias and how Soroptimists are forging change for women – if you click on this link you can hear Jane at 41 mins in for 8 mins http://radioverulam.com/rvplayer/?timestamp=1646762400&offset=235
