The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action of 1995 (Beijing Platform for Action) is the most visionary agenda for the empowerment of women and girls, everywhere. Developed at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China.  Also known as the largest-ever gathering of gender equality advocates the Beijing Platform for Action was adopted by 189 governments committed to taking strategic, bold action in 12 critical areas of concern: poverty, education and training, health, violence, armed conflict, economy, power and decision-making, institutional mechanisms, human rights, media, environment, and the girl child. In 2020, it will be 25 years since the Beijing Platform for Action set out how to remove the systemic barriers that hold women back from equal participation in all areas of life, whether in public or in private. Despite some progress, real change has been agonisingly slow for the majority of women and girls in

The UN International Day of Living Together in Peace was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 8 December 2017 under Resolution 72/130.  Based on the UN Charter, the UNESCO Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  The aim of the Day is to build a sustainable world of peace, solidarity and harmony by upholding the desire to live and act together, through partnerships, and to be united in our differences and diversity. This year the day will have particular significance for those involved in World War II, as it will follow on closely from commemorating VE (Victory in Europe) Day 75 on 8th May.  World War II in Asia did not end until 2nd September, 1945 when the armed forces of Japan surrendered to the Allies. Without working across nations these victories could not have been achieved. In 2020 we are faced with

Try out 6 actions to fight climate change

Climate change is a proven fact. Global warming has caused serious changes to the planet, such as rising sea levels, extreme weather events, deforestation, disappearance of species But, as individuals we can slow down global warming by implementing small more sustainable actions within our community. 1. Reduce emissions Use your car less, whenever possible.  Instead use sustainable transportation, such as bicycling, or use public transportation more often. In the case of long-distance travel, trains are more sustainable than airplanes.  These cause a great deal of the CO2 emitted into the atmosphere. If you’re into cars, remember that every kilometre that you increase your speed will considerably increase CO2 emissions and expenses. According to the CE, each litre of fuel that your car uses, equals 2.5 kilos of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere. 2.

Take action now! We agree with the Prison Reform Trust that the Bill provides a rare opportunity to improve legal protection for survivors who are driven to offend by their experience of abuse.   Government data tells us that nearly 60% of women in prison are survivors of domestic abuse. The Prison Reform Trust report ‘There’s a reason we’re in trouble’ contains many examples of women who have been convicted of offences that arose directly from their abuse, such as holding drugs for an abusive partner. Their proposed amendments would offer survivors the same protection that is currently in place for other vulnerable groups and we urge MPs to express their support. However there does not appear to be any media coverage regarding this significant event.  Let’s take action  for justice rightly deserved PLEASE, let people know. 1950’s women had their state pensions deferred twice by stealth, for the meanest state pension in Europe – under the false premise of equality and longevity.     Violence against women and girls: the shadow pandemic Statement by Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director of UN Women With 90 countries in lockdown, four billion people are now sheltering at home from the global contagion of COVID-19. It’s a protective measure, but it brings another deadly danger. We see a shadow pandemic growing, of violence against women.  As more countries report infection and lockdown, more domestic violence helplines and shelters across the world are reporting rising calls for help. In Argentina, Canada, France, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom (1), and the United States (2), government authorities, women’s rights activists and civil society partners have flagged increasing reports of domestic violence during the crisis, and heightened demand for emergency shelter (3 ,4 ,5). Helplines in Singapore (6) and Cyprus have registered an increase in calls by more than 30 percent (7). In Australia, 40 per cent
