Join us in protecting migrant women from abuse and domestic violence                    Vic Atkins reply July 2020 (1) We campaign for the implementation of safe-reporting mechanisms and the end of data-sharing policies when victims approach the police Insecure immigration status is often a tool of control used by perpetrators to abuse their partners and threat them with deportation. This situation put migrant women in a vulnerable position: they fear the abuser and also fear asking for help. The current lack of safe-reporting mechanisms creates a barrier for migrant women to flee violence and gives greater impunity to perpetrators. Evidence shows that 92% of women with insecure status have received threats of deportation from perpetrators (Imkaan 2012). #StepUpMigrantWomen calls for safe reporting mechanisms to separate reporting of crime and access to support services from immigration control. MGoS The members of the Major Groups and Other Stakeholders (MGoS), official stakeholders to the United Nations Sustainable Development processes, are concerned and disappointed that governments have failed to deliver a Ministerial Declaration at the end of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The forum was held virtually from 7-16 July 2020. Now more than ever, sustainable & liveable futures of all should be at center, free from violence, oppression & discrimination. We need an ambitious Ministerial Declaration from #HLPF2020. Read, support, and share the MGoS’ press release with your networks and on social media. Thank you! Don’t let MPs debate staff experiences of bullying and harassment! Thanks again to everyone who signed the letter, urging the Leader of the House of Commons against allowing MPs to debate cases of bullying and harassment.  This was shared with MPs, and to everyone who made noise about this on social media.  The letter, which can be found on CAG website here, has been signed by 62 women’s rights organisations, activists and Parliamentary staff past and present. This shows just how much support there is for a fully independent complaints process.  The Guardian have covered the letter here. Please share this on social media. DOMESTIC ABUSE BILL – PROPOSED CHANGES IN THE LAW FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE SURVIVORS DRIVEN TO OFFEND

We have been working with legal and domestic abuse experts to call for improved legal protection for survivors of domestic abuse to be added to the Domestic Abuse Bill for those whose offending is driven by their experience of domestic abuse. This would address a gap in legal protection for survivors, strengthen recognition of the links between victimisation and offending and deter inappropriate prosecutions. The Bill was reintroduced on 3 March 2020 and we are building parliamentary support for our proposed amendments to give legal protection to those driven by domestic abuse into offending.  Our proposed amendments have been tabled by Jess Phillips MP for consideration by the Public Bill Committee, which will report by 25 June.  Two recent articles discuss why the new defences are needed.  PRT associate Sarah Beresford’s blog is based on her recent conversation with a child whose mother is in prison for an

Ladies and gentlemen, All of us here know that failing to act on climate change will cause irreversible consequences. As temperatures continue to rise, droughts and heatwaves will become more common. This will devastate nature and biodiversity. And exact a catastrophic economic cost. So it is great to see cities and countries, businesses and investors, uniting against this global threat. Last week, the COP Bureau of the UNFCCC, with the UK and our Italian partners, agreed that COP26 will take place between 1st and 12th November 2021. COP26 can be a moment where the world unites behind a fairer, greener recovery from the effects of Covid-19. A recovery which delivers for both our people and our planet. In recent years, the UK has shown that green growth is absolutely possible. Since 1990 we have grown our economy by 75% whilst cutting emissions by 43%. And

COP26 For the first time, the UK will host the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) in Glasgow on 1 – 12 November 2021. The climate talks will be the biggest international summit the UK has ever hosted; bringing together over 30,000 delegates including heads of state, climate experts and campaigners to agree coordinated action to tackle climate change. The challenge is not insignificant, but we must step up to it to save the environment we all live in. The UN Climate Change process is central to that collective action.  The 26th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 26) to the UNFCCC was originally scheduled to take place from 9-19 November 2020, in Glasgow, UK.  On 28 May 2020, the COP Bureau decided that it would take place from 1-12 November 2021, in Glasgow,

#HEARMYSIVOICE Soroptimist International supports all activities which work towards achieving SDG 16, promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development. However, we do not hear of the work of the UN Security Council very often. I was invited recently through National Alliance of Women’s Organisations (NAWO) UK, to attend a virtual consultation with NGOs and the current President of the UN Security Council, His Excellency Sven Jurgenson of Estonia. It was a very interesting meeting attended by about 90 representatives from a wide range of non governmental organisations with consultative status at the UN. The President indicated that initially after 12 March 2020 when the UN closed its doors very little took place at the Security Council whilst they were trying to work out how to make progress during the current COVID–19 pandemic. Once they decided to work virtually it took them some time to set

On 8 June 2020, it will be 8 years since the UK signed the Istanbul Convention on violence against women. Much progress has been made in this time.   However, eight years on, we are anxious to see ratification at last. Ratifying the Convention is a key step in securing a safe future for women and girls in the UK. We cannot afford to wait. As a parliamentarian, you have a critical role to play in helping us keep this on the government’s agenda and ensuring they keep their promise to ratify the Convention. Please speak out on 8 June and call on the UK Government to ratify the Istanbul Convention. How you can help: Print a copy of our campaign board here. Get a photo of yourself holding the campaign board. Share it on social media with the hashtags #RatifyIC. #IstanbulConvention and tag @ICChangeUK on Facebook and Twitter.
