To add to the general fun and merriment of the weekend, we decided organise a Barn Dance with live band and caller as a quintessential British activity to teach our Dutch and German sisters how to dance! Only a few toes were trod on and there was much hilarity all round. We all learnt a new step called ‘peel your banana’, which mainly involved running around the line of participants in your group as fast as possible to get back to the start! Chaos and mayhem which provided much amusement for those watching. Which way now?!!! And of course, some cake!
Whilst our some of our Soroptimist Sisters shopped, went sight seeing or simply rested, Joke and Loes (Arnhem Oost) and Andrea (Remscheid) spent a lovely few hours with one of our older Club members Yvonne. Loes and Yvonne have known each other for over 30 years and there was a lot of catching up to do!
Don’t we look fabulous as more than 50 of us gathered round for our 50th Celebrations group photo in the courtyard of the Lord Leycester Hospital ! So many friends from Midland Arden Region joined us together with Arnhem Oost, Remscheid and Cardiff. We had a fabulous tour led by two of the brethren who live there, so much history but very much part of the modern world. We learnt that an episode of Dr Who was filmed there and that the buildings have been used for the forthcoming Christmas Carol – hence the artificial snow in June! The current Master Heidi Meyer is the first female Master in its 500 year history, if you ever get the chance to hear her speak do go, she’s had an amazingly interesting life. We were joined by Federation President Elect Isobel Smith.
The sun shone as we began our weekend of fun and friendship with an informal gathering at Sharon’s house. We established new friendships and renewed old ones with our Soroptimist links from Arnhem Oost, Remscheid and Cardiff. Gifts were exchanged as we celebrated our Sisterhood. The Dutch have raised the bar regarding speeches as they preferred to sing us a song! Tulips from Arnhem-Oost, the video of this is posted on our Facebook page Well it wouldn’t be a Soroptimist without a little cake!
