Delivery of microwaves and soroptimist microwave handbooks to West End foodbank!

After reading that past member and Club President Janet Heal had produced a microwave handbook for people experiencing homelessness, Newcastle Club were inspired to look at how they could support her work. They have been working with their local food banks over the past year and were horrified recently to learn that many people are unable to afford gas and electricity to cook the food they are provided with. So inspired by Janet’s  book they contacted the west End Foodbank to see if they could use and distribute microwaves to address this problem. Their response was overwhelmingly positive. Carol, their Pathways Out Of Hunger Manger told them that only the day before of a client who is mentally and physically vulnerable had asked for one but at that time had no way of providing them with one.     https://sigbi.org/ukpac/virtual-study-day-2021/ Members of the club attended the morning session of the UKPAC Study Day on Domestic Violence.  Unfortunately, the afternoon session was postponed until July 3rd because of Prince Philip’s funeral. Those attending were very impressed by Dame Sara Thornton D.B.E., Q.P.M.’s presentation which included current statistics and suggested ways in which Soroptimists could take action in the future.   (Dame Sara is the Independent Anti – Slavery Commissioner) Her presentation can be viewed in the YouTube link below. The Clewer Initiative – ‘Women in the Shadows,’ the new Lent Course

For many years, Soroptimists have raised awareness about Modern Day Slavery and trafficking, so we are pleased to share this online course prepared by The Clewer Initiative – Women in the Shadows.  Please see the following message from Bishop Alastair Redfern, The Clewer Initiative. The above course is now ready to download on The Clewer Initiative website – www.theclewerinitiative.org /womenintheshadows Everything you will need  is online and is a resource to use during Lent. The focus of the course is how women and girls can become trapped in sexual exploitation, forced labour and county lines drug smuggling and what life is like for them beyond slavery. It also explores how we can support victims as they recover from the trauma and build resilient communities where modern slavery is noticed and cannot thrive. It is so important that we raise awareness of the suffering of marginalised
