This is a project which allows us the opportunity to show our creativity by making Twiddle Muffs, Blankets or Aprons for dementia patients.
People with dementia often have restless hands and like to have something to keep their hands occupied. A twiddle muff provides a wonderful source of visual, tactile and sensory stimulation, and keeps hands snug and warm at the same time. They are usually knitted with strands of textured ribbons, beads, and various fabrics attached both inside and out – the more colourful and interesting the better! Twiddle mats and aprons serve the same purpose – these are good sewing projects.
The Order of St John Care Trust in Salisbury is a not-for-profit charitable trust which has 4 care homes in our area. We have already supplied them with these items for their residents and we keep their supplies ‘topped up’. We are also making them available to people living with dementia in the community. If you know of someone who would benefit, or if you would like to make items for us, do get in touch!
