Winchester Soroptimist Charity Event Exceeds All Expectations!

A group of members of the SI Winchester and District Club, who live in Selborne, decided on a programme of fundraising events to alleviate the ongoing plight and sufferings of children in Syrian refugee camps.  They were inspired by the moving comment of the UN General Secretary, Ban Ki-moon that Syrian refugee children continue to suffer on ‘ a scale that haunts the soul’; deeply concerned by the ongoing crisis of the Syrian children in Turkish migration camps they decided to hold a Cheese and Wine evening in Selborne Village Hall. The aim was to raise enough money to help the children continue their education. The organisers expected to make around £500.00 but were overwhelmed by the amazing generosity of the Selborne villagers and all those who supported the event. An astonishing profit of over £2000.00 was achieved!

SI Winchester members Carol and Jennifer have delivered the books for World Book Night to four Charities – Emmaus, Winchester Women’s Refuge, Trinity and Winchester Churches Night Shelter.   The people in the shot are from The Night Shelter and gave permission for this photo to be used on the website. They were particularly pleased with the book ‘Street Cat Bob’ by James Bowen. Both the staff and clients had heard of it as it highlights life on the streets. This is the third year that SI Winchester and District has been successful in being selected as an agent, enabling us to give books to these charities.

In November President Julie accompanied her mother (from SI Nantwich) on a visit to relatives in Australia. In true Soroptimist style it was also an opportunity to meet with fellow Soroptimists and with a few well timed emails beforehand this fell into place. The first stop was Melbourne where President Erica of SI Melba had started this new club as a breakaway from the established SI Melbourne. As happens from time to time there are different views and Erica is a dynamic Soroptimist and used to be a member of SI Lewisham hence the connection with President Julie, as they had shared the same Chilterns Region in the past. Erica clearly had a good group of members and they had recently held an event for schools where the attendance was 300 young girls, to listen to motivational speakers and how to progress in education and

New member Marion Christmas was a popular guest speaker at the March club meeting, talking about her voluntary work with the scout movement in the Gambia, raising money to build Kaira Konko Lodge and also a school. Marion had learned about the SI project for BIG – birthing in the Gambia –  and our own club project with pillowcase dresses while she was there.  We therefore welcome Marion warmly and look forward to her input to our membership.  She has since received a MBE and an Honorary Fellowship from Winchester University for her involvement with the Gambia. President Julie welcomes new member Marion Christmas.

Serendipidy! Just as we were looking for a reliable and affordable way to get 136 pillowcase dresses to Banjul in the Gambia, Marion Christmas was our guest speaker at the last supper meeting of the club year.  Her topic was her work with the scout movement in the Gambia and Kaira Konko Lodge.  Naturally we showed Marion some of the beautiful dresses made by schoolgirls in Hampshire for schoolgirls in the Gambia.  To our delight and relief Marion said she could find room for them in her “luggage” on her next trip to Banjul.  Marion personally delivered the dresses to SI Banjul and met a teacher and some of the girls from the school supported by the club.

We were delighted to welcome the legendary Marion Christmas as our final speaker in the club year.  And what a finale!   Marion’s involvement in the Gambia started In 1989.  A Hampshire Scouts Expedition (which included Marion’s son, Paul) spent six weeks building classrooms at Soma and Jirof Schools in the Gambia. Two years later three scouts from the Gambia were sponsored to come to the UK to participate in an International Camp. For some of the time they stayed with the Christmas family.  Marion, in her capacity as Assistant Group Scout Leader for Second Bentley Scout Group asked the young men, ‘Of all the things you have seen here, what would you most like to have in the Gambia?’  She expected the usual teenager’s wishlist. ‘A Scout Centre like Ferny Crofts’, they replied.  Ferny Crofts is the Hampshire Scout Centre in the New Forest. Marion’s response was ‘I’ll build you one’. She had never been

Not really known for their craft work, SI Winchester members have been putting long-forgotten skills to good use.   For more information on the Pillowcase Dress project click here.     Urged by Gerry Godwin, our Regional Ambassador for The BIG Project, we took up our needles to make over forty shawls for premature babies supported by the project.  To find out more about our work for BIG click here.     So many clubs responded to Gerry’s call to knit, by the time we finished our shawls they were surplus to requirements in the Gambia. All was not lost because they were welcomed enthusiastically by the Premature Baby Unit in our own local hospital.

Shoe Biz – how old shoes can change children’s lives

SI Winchester first heard about the Shoe Biz scheme from SI Preston and we thought it was a great idea – simple, sensible and effective.  In two weeks we raided our wardrobes and collected 85 pairs of unwanted shoes and not all of them belonged to our husbands! UNICEF and Clarks, the shoe retailer, have been in partnership since 2007. In that time, Clarks has contributed to transforming children’s lives through Shoe Biz, gathering old or unwanted shoes at collection points in more than 600 Clarks stores nationwide. The shoes are recycled in the UK and the money raised funds UNICEF’s education projects.  More than 67 million children of primary school age are still not in education. This is more than the population of the UK! Clarks is helping UNICEF to ensure that more children are able to go to school. Some of the

Malala Yousafzai and her book need no introduction.*  Deeming it a “must-read” for all young women, the club decided to provide a copy to five local schools.  No doubt the schools have already ordered their own copies but we wanted to demonstrate that our organisation is at one with Malala in the huge importance we attach to the right of every girl to an education.  The book was co-written with Christina Lamb, Foreign Correspondent with The Sunday Times and an interesting and inspiring speaker at our 2009 Federation Conference in Cardiff.       * But just in case … When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley, one girl spoke out.  Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education.  On Tuesday 9 October 2012, she almost paid the ultimate price.  Shot in the head at point blank range
