Celebrating International Women’s Day on March 8th 2022

in

On March 8th, members of SI Newcastle are: attending Canning Street Primary School to visit the children and see the results of their challenge to the Year 6 pupils to represent, in either words or artwork, a woman who has inspired them. Later, others are attending West End Women and Girls’ Centre to join  with them as they light up their building with the opening of the 40 Women and Girls exhibition, book launch and a series of large-scale projections onto our building supported by the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.  Finally, some members are attending the Tyne to Stand Up Comedy Gala in aid of Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland.  Rie Pearson (author of ‘Be Kind.No Excuses’)  has also invited us to join a Live online Summit where we have ladies coming onto the BKNE page from all over the world to discuss this years’

SI Newcastle would like to congratulate our member, Christine Lumsdon, in securing funding from the Churchill Fellowship to  support the West End Women and Girls’ Centre’s first activity on their farm. This includes setting up a large polytunnel for growing food and also to provide transport to the farm for their members. Fantastic work Christine! @westendwomenandgirls Facebook @WEWAGC Twitter Wewagc Instagram Facebook: @ChurchillFellowship Twitter: @ChurchillFship Instagram:  churchillfellowship Churchill Fellowship website:  https://bit.ly/3o2BYpV Since the start of the pandemic,  many organisations have had to rethink the way in which they operate.  The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust has not been able to award travelling fellowships for two years now.  The Trustees agreed to put some unspent funds into a COVID-19 Action Fund and invite existing Churchill Fellows to apply for a grant ( maximum of £10,000 to be spent in the year 2022 ) to support any work

International Human Rights – the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

International Human Rights – the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

in

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a milestone document in the history of human rights. It sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected. It has been translated into 500 languages and is the most translated document in the world. Women are entitled to the full and equal enjoyment of all of their human rights and to be free from all forms of discrimination. #Soroptimists   Globally have human rights at the top of their agenda. #16daysofactivism #Orangetheworld #Generationequality

Sexual Harassment

Sexual Harassment

in

As more women find space at the work place, and make positive progress towards leadership roles, they are faced with challenges. Women are targeted for their gender and for progressive roles they have adopted. Female employees suffer harassment. Laws of Prevention of Harassment at work place are in place but more needs to be done. #Soroptimists call for an end to violence against women NOW! #Orangetheworld, at #Generationequality #16Daysofactivism #Metoo

Sexual Exploitation

Sexual Exploitation

in

#Soroptimists will not tolerate sexual exploitation. We call for no tolerance to such violations of human dignity. Sexual exploitations is exploitation of a woman /girl and her body, and child sexual exploitation that leads to child prostitution. Such activity engrains stereotypes and often leads to harmful discrimination. Raise your voice against such exploitation. Discrimination Against Women in Rural Communities

Discrimination Against Women in Rural Communities

in

Today we rise for the hard toil and struggle of women in rural communities who compose almost 50% of the agricultural work force. This unpaid labour is coupled with their responsibilities to their homes. Gender-based discrimination and the suffering from the impact of climate change and disasters affect them disproportionately. Soroptimists call for equity and equality for rural women. #Orangetheworld, at #Generationequality.
