Local Soroptimists Staying Connected #SoroptimistsConnect

Saturday 18 July is Soroptimist Day of Action and members of Soroptimist International of Newcastle upon Tyne have been staying connected throughout the Covid19 crisis and continue to support and connect with projects local, national and international. S.I. Newcastle President, Christine Jones said: “Soroptimists in Newcastle upon Tyne are working hard to support two local foodbanks: Newcastle West End Foodbank and the Newcastle East Foodbank by making donations of food, toilet rolls and money. In addition, S.I. Newcastle Secretary, Cris Young, has been writing to local supermarkets to ask about the possibility of on-line customers being able to donate to Foodbanks with their weekly shop. At our last Zoom meeting we raised our cups to our local food banks to thank their staff and volunteers for keeping our community fed in this time of crisis’’. So do look out for our posts on Facebook,

An Update on Programme Action in lockdown provided by our Programme Action Officer. At our last meeting we had in March – it does seem so long ago!, we were planning our Programme Action for the coming year but little did we know just what was coming  But in just 3 short months despite not being able to meet or even get out for many of us we’ve done so much. We decided to celebrate the Centenary of Soroptimist International by theming some of our PA around 💯 100 tins for the food bank. Challenged by the emergence of Covid19 we adapted by • immediately making donations of £100 to both East and West End Newcastle Foodbanks • encouraging members to make donations of tins into the collection boxes at the supermarkets. Although a Newcastle Club given the current restrictions we agreed that members should support

World Environment Day – June 5th

World Environment Day – June 5th

We are more reliant on nature’s interconnected web and delicate balance than ever. Life on earth would not be possible without nature’s services, yet, these are exceptional times in which nature is sending us a message. Viruses are causing loss of lives and livelihoods; forcing our lives to come to a stand-still. Nature is showing us that life as we know it, is on the verge of a breakdown. This World Environment Day, it’s Time for Nature. Time to reimagine our relationship with nature; and put it at the heart of our decision making. #ForNature Climate change will force people into increasing poverty and displacement, worsening the causes of conflict, making both humanitarian needs and responses in such situations even more complex. This #WorldEnvironmentDay we ask governments to address sustainable options when rebuilding our economies and infrastructures post Covid19 to help stop climate change.  #ForNature

Advocacy SI Newcastle-upon-Tyne for their survey “Specialist Domestic Violence Courts – how special are they? How many women suffer unfair treatment in the Special Domestic Violence courts? Soroptimist International of Newcastle upon Tyne Stand up for Women against trafficking and modern day slavery. Traffickers say openly that their trade is more lucrative than drugs or arms sales because people can be sold and resold time and again. During our 16 days of activism against violence against women Soroptimists in Newcastle upon Tyne shine a spotlight on this barbaric and pernicious trade. Some 800,000 women and children are trafficked across borders annually, many of them for sexual exploitation, as sex workers, sex slaves or for pornography In 2016 it was estimated that 28 million women were in slavery worldwide, including forced labour, enforced prostitution or forced marriage. Women and girls account for 99% of victims in the commercial sex industry, and 58% of other sectors of forced labour. Working for poor or no wages, kept as domestic or sex slaves, fearful to speak
