16 Days of Activism – Lancaster Soroptimists Lancaster was bathed in an orange glow when at the request of Lancaster Soroptimist Club, for the evening of 25 November Williamson Memorial was lit in orange. It signalled the start of “16 days of Activism” to end violence against women now. Globally, the 25th of November is the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Men’s Violence against Women. This is the largest violence against women campaign and kicks off the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence which runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day. They were supported by the Mayor of Lancaster and pictured here with Lancaster MP Cat Smith.

Regional Meeting – 12 June 2021 At the latest, virtual, gathering of clubs from Northwest England on 12 June, the main theme of the meeting was Climate Change. So to tie in with the G7 Summit taking place in Cornwall (at which climate change was due to be a significant topic) and the Climate Change Conference COP26 taking place in Glasgow in November, we were asked to give an update on any work we had done as clubs on this important topic. Well, to say that there was a wide range of activity reported would be a vast understatement! From meat-free meals, to lobbying for wildflower verges, to recycling of all sorts of items, to tree planting – and lots more in between. As well as the wide diversity, it was also striking just how much many clubs had in common as well. Videos of

February Regional Meeting 2021 Thanks to the wonders of modern technology and a very willing Regional Communications Officer, we were able to meet on Saturday, 13 February 2021 for our short Regional Meeting, via Zoom.  Whilst this is not the same as meeting everyone ‘in person’, where we can chat before, after and during the lunch break, I do think it is important that we continue to hold our meetings in whatever format that we can.  It’s always interesting to scroll through the pages of those present and it was lovely to see Judith Grocott with us. Our speaker was Rebekah Wilson, Communications Officer at The Wish Centre and she gave us a really comprehensive talk about ‘Impact of Policing, Family Courts and new Domestic Violence Bill on victims of domestic abuse’.  There was a lot of information to take in and I guess that

Making a Difference Preston Soroptimists are celebrating International Women’s Day with a ‘Zoominar’.  The theme is ‘Making a Difference’ and we have some great speakers to inspire us. These include Katherine Fletcher MP for South Ribble and Lucy Candy, manager of the local domestic refuge, both of whom make a massive difference in their own ways. It will be held on Saturday March 6 from 1.00 to 3.00pm – you know you don’t have anything in your diary so why not join us?
