President Elaine ‘scoots’ for Handicap International

President Elaine ‘scoots’ for Handicap International

in

To support Handicap International’s ‘Every Step Counts’ fundraising campaign, President Elaine took to her mobility scooter for a sponsored ride around the perimeter of Marine Lake in Southport, a distance of 3 to 4 miles. She was accompanied by husband, dog (Bonnie the cocker spaniel) and assorted members of SI Southport and their families. The ‘ Every Step Counts’ appeal aims to raise essential funds to help disabled and injured people walk again by supporting sustainable rehabilitation care in countries that need it most. And, until 18th July, every pound raised will be doubled by the UK government, enabling twice as many disabled children to walk again. Through her efforts, Elaine has raised around £400 (the exact total yet to be determined) and this will be match funded.

Membership Month in Southport

Membership Month in Southport

in

To celebrate Membership Month in May, members of Soroptimist International Southport had a stand at The Atkinson, Southport’s arts, culture and heritage centre. Members gave out leaflets asking the question “Ask Me Why I’m a Soroptimist”, answered questions on the organisation and raised the profile of SI.  Photos and articles on the stand showed how members shared fun and friendship whilst fundraising, giving service and undertaking projects with a local, national and international impact.

The Club held its annual Christmas Coffee Morning at Baverstock House. Our talented members have spent the last few weeks in creative mode, crafting festive decorations, gifts and cards which were on sale at the Christmas stall. The home made cake stall was well stocked but quickly sold out. There was also two raffles – one for a Christmas cake, prepared by member Barbara Welby, and the other for pamper hampers – and a bottle tombola.  Coffee, tea and mince pies were provided throughout the morning. In total over £1000 was raised for local charities.

International Night, 2015

International Night, 2015

Our annual International Night was held in early December. This year, our theme was Italy, as a tribute to our friendship link of Caserta, who celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2015. Carol Hill and the members of the International Committee prepared an delicious Italian buffet as the members were challenged to a table quiz about the country, the art and the history. We were joined by guests Sandy Taylor, SI South Lancs Regional President and Liz Downham, President of Southport Inner Wheel Club. The proceeds from the evening were combined with those from our Friendship Night and donated to the International President’s Appeal, ‘Educate to Lead: Nepal’.
