The Don McMath Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation whose mission is to provide free education to some of the most disadvantaged children living within a three mile radius of the school. Families are vetted to ensure that those who cannot genuinely afford school fees benefit. As far as the Foundation is aware it is the only completely free school in The Gambia.
The Gambia, with a population of 1.5 million, is one of the poorest nations in the world. It has been estimated that only 40% of those aged over 15 can read or write so it is this appalling situation that the Foundation is trying to address.
SI Southport currently sponsors four young girls at the school. We raise the sponsorship money by collecting loose change, holding coffee mornings and themed lunches. One of the most rewarding aspects of our sponsorship is that we receive regular updates on the children’s progress, school reports and some very cute photographs!
