Over £230 was raised by SI Swansea by filling Smartie Tubes with 20p pieces. Each member was asked by President Sue (2014) to refill the tube after eating the contents. Well done, a good excuse for eating sweets.
Liz Slade, Young Single Homeless Project (SYSHP Drws Agored), spoke about her work at President Norma’s 1st Business meeting. Programme Action is at the centre of soroptimism work. Lynn Minshall, one of our Programme Action Officers, arranged the meeting. See http://www.homelessuk.org/details.asp?id=HO1008782 for further information about the project.
Tonight, 2nd May at the Brangwyn Hall is a Gala Concert with Rebecca Evans, Ariosa Singers and the Pontarddulais Male Choir to support Dementia Awareness through the Swansea Dementia Supportive Community. Tickets from £10.
The 3 Presidents for the following year have been chosen: Norma Glass (April 2015 – September 2015) Anne Norton (September 2015 – January 2016) Val Woodall (January 2016 – April 2016).
Susan Johnson was welcomed in as a member of SI Swansea by President Sue James. Carol Davies presented her to the president as Membership Officer deputising for Viv Hanford. The previous new member was Lynn Minshall who joined this Summer 2014.
Volunteers from SI Swansea cleaned Blackpill Beach at the end of the holiday season and were delighted to find less debris than at the beginning of the season. Well done visitors and local people for looking after our environment!
New Swansea SI member Lynn Minshall has just been elected as the new chair of the Western Bay AHT (Anti Human Trafficking) Group. Lynn, a highly trained Social Worker in the Swansea Youth Offending Service, has been an enthusiastic addition to the club and represents our region, SI Wales South, on this committee after working as a Manager in strategic and operational roles. Her safeguarding young people, negotiating, custody portfolio and interest in dealing with modern day slavery will stand her in good stead for this new role. Congratulations!
Manager of LASA Credit Union in Swansea, Denis Greenall, visited SI Swansea at the September Dinner meeting and explained the role that credit unions play in our communities as loans and savings cooperatives. At least 2 members of SI Swansea are already members and further support was welcome from anyone with a skill to offer on the committees that run the organisation. The work with young people in schools was illustrated and pictures of the Duchess of Cornwall’s visit this Summer were shown.
Mr Thompson visited us (for a change!) for a Soroptimist meal at Sketty Hall and we are delighted that 2 more members will be joining us at St Helen’s Primary School to cover sickness and holidays. We listen to the children read once a week and talk about the story and extend their knowledge of the subject. It is mutually beneficial and we enjoy seeing the school children grow and develop towards their full potential.
