Club members had a lovely lunch at Bradley Gardens and Joint Presidents Christine and Margaret took the opportunity of being face to face to share the Chains of Office!
What a brilliant start to the new club year. We inducted a new ‘linked’ member, Lynne, had an excellent guest speaker, and a lively and stimulating discussion about Programme Action plans, our November Charter l.unch and our outing to Bradley Gardens. Our guest speaker was Rie Pearson , a retired police officer, who gave a presentation about her book; ‘Be Kind. No Excuses.’ This is a guide to help teenage girls recognise abusive behaviours in intimate relationships. Needless to say, it stimulated a wide ranging discussion!

At the March 23rd meeting, we agreed to send money to each of the Soroptimist clubs in the Ukraine via Hilary Clavering ( Sunderland SI,). In this way the money would go to SI Europe who would forward it to the clubs so that they could use the money as they saw fit. Hilary shared with us this laest posting from one of the five Ukrainian clubs. On Tuesday evening, we had a lively meeting in spite of the fact that two of our members had Covid. We hope both Kath and Chris make a speedy recovery. Fortunately, we met on Zoom. We were delighted to welcome Claire Clancy, Deputy Headteacher, from Canning Street School in the West End of Newcastle upon Tyne. Claire gave us a presentation about developing outdoor learning at Canning Street and showed how our support had aided the development of their garden and forest school. On International Women’s Day, President Christine went to the IWWD Awards event for the Year 6 pupils which we had organised with Canning Street Primary School. All the children received a certificate and Celebration chocolate. The school was really pleased with the enthusiasm and the effort they all put in. The children were challenged to depict, in either words or images, a woman who had inspired them. They researched on the Internet and in their books. President Christine thoroughly enjoyed this collaboration and was very impressed at the enthusiasm and standard of work produced by the children. In this Platinum Jubilee year, she was delighted to note that many of the children had chosen Queen Elizabeth 11 as a lady who had inspired them. Last night, on International Women’s Day, Club members joined in celebrations with the West End Women and Girls Centre whom we have supported over recent years. Please see our previous posts re. our supporting their Domestic Violence Champions and more recently, a club member, Christine, was successful in securing £10.000 of funding to support the WEWGC ‘s farm in Northumberland. In addition to the IWD celebrations, the centre was celebrating 40 years in the City! A great time was had by all, and here’s to the next 40 years. On March 8th, members of SI Newcastle are: attending Canning Street Primary School to visit the children and see the results of their challenge to the Year 6 pupils to represent, in either words or artwork, a woman who has inspired them. Later, others are attending West End Women and Girls’ Centre to join with them as they light up their building with the opening of the 40 Women and Girls exhibition, book launch and a series of large-scale projections onto our building supported by the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. Finally, some members are attending the Tyne to Stand Up Comedy Gala in aid of Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland. Rie Pearson (author of ‘Be Kind.No Excuses’) has also invited us to join a Live online Summit where we have ladies coming onto the BKNE page from all over the world to discuss this years’
