Le Marché Vert

Soroptimist International Esperance hosted “Le Marché Vert”, its first Green Market fund-raising project in Block 7 Park, Palmiste. The key objective was to create a forum to encourage female entrepreneurs to participate. One of the aims of this event was to encourage the use of natural, organic and locally produced items and foods. It was to create an awareness and consciousness that will act as a catalyst in the way consumers behave towards the environment. Ultimately, Soroptimists are always striving towards a cleaner and greener planet following the watchwords ‘Refuse, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle and Rot.’

Vendors were chosen who focus on products and services that are environment friendly. Those attending were able to purchase a variety of items from skilled artisans, local farmers, gourmet chefs and plants grown by persons passionate about everything green.

Soroptimist International Esperance is committed to assisting rural women and girls. The produce stall was of benefit to both the vendor and the patrons.

Patrons were able to taste samples of locally made wines, chutneys and preserves while appreciating the colours of locally bred orchids, bromeliads, crotons and a variety of flowering plants.

Esperance Soroptimist Ursula de Castro was drawn to the colourful orchids. The Kidz Zone can be seen in the background.

Guests were delighted with the delicious local breakfast and Sunday lunch at affordable prices. Sensitive to the environment, the Soroptimists used biodegradable containers to package the food. Patrons were able to enjoy their refreshments under the marquee, chat with family and friends and still be in full view of the amazing display of products which they could later purchase.

The central marquee provided a dining and relaxing space.

Le Marché Vert was intended to be a day for the entire family to spend out in the fresh air. The Kid’s Zone with its bouncy castles, face painting and incredible edibles, delighted and enticed the children who had enormous fun. Parents were able to sit and watch their children have fun in a safe, secure, green environment.

The Kidz Zone was a popular feature with families.

Both the vendors and patrons said that they were looking forward to the next Green Market. It was a fulfilling day on many levels.
