Terry Waite CBE
Terry Waite CBE – former hostage, writer, lecturer and humanitarian.
While in solitary confinement as a hostage in Beirut, Terry Waite mentally wrote his autobiography. After five years in captivity he was released and, wanting to ensure that his experience was not ‘totally negative’, wrote his compelling memoir, Taken on Trust, which became a best seller. Proceeds from the book helped him to launch a career of lecturing, writing and charity work.
These days he is president of the charity Y Care International, the YMCA’s international development and relief agency. The YMCA is the oldest and largest youth charity in the world. He is also patron of AbleChildAfrica and Habitat for Humanity Great Britain and president of Emmaus UK, a charity for formerly homeless people
