Our 2019 Charity Auction

Our 2019 Charity Auction

in

SI Southport held their biennial ‘Celebrity Auction’ in aid of raising funds for local charities. This year our celebrity auctioneers were Flanagan and Allen  – also known as Jean Tweddell and Margaret Davies – who encouraged the bidding, as well as interspersing the sale with some lively singing. There were over 100 lots on offer – everything from kitchen items, jewellery, clothing and toys, plus some ‘promises’ of delicious meals and desserts – and members and their friends were very generous. Great fun was had by all and over £750 was raised for local charities. Many thanks to all who attended and donated lots to make it such a successful evening.

Programme Action Meeting – Health Matters!

Programme Action Meeting – Health Matters!

in

For the last few years, SI Southport has concentrated on three areas of Programme Action – these are health, education and violence against women. In early February, the health team arranged an excellent evening – a delicious meal and an outstanding presentation by our newest member. She presented a very personal story of her husband’s condition – how, from feeling unwell on holiday, he was diagnosed with a serious brain injury, a condition which transformed both their lives. She spoke very honestly and passionately of the following months and how they learned to cope with this new situation  – and how she became aware of Headway Sefton, a charity set up to help and give support to people affected by brain injury. The charity operates on a local and national basis, providing a number of services, including rehabilitation programmes, carer support and community outreach.  With

A festive morning at Baverstock

A festive morning at Baverstock

SI Southport held their annual Christmas Coffee Morning at the club room in Baverstock House. Our talented members have spent the last few weeks in creative mode, crafting festive decorations, gifts and cards which were on sale at the Christmas stall.  A bottle tombola was very popular and the home made cake stall was well stocked but quickly sold out. There were two raffles – one for a Christmas cake, expertly prepared by member Barbara Welby, and the other for an enormous festive hamper filled with treats such as biscuits, port, truffles and smoked foods. Coffee, tea and mince pies were provided throughout the morning. In total over £600 was raised for local charities.

SI Southport’s Bowling Activities

SI Southport’s Bowling Activities

Each year, a regional bowling tournament is held, open to all SI clubs in the South Lancs region. In 2018, SI Southport entered their team and were runners-up. On Sunday 9 September 2018, a very cold and windy day with heavy rain during the afternoon, five members entered the Singles competition at Pennington Park, Leigh. Although we did not win we had a wonderful day of fun and friendship. One of our newest members of the club, Joan Hardwick, who was also new to bowling, joined the team.  She played very well during the various games and qualified for entry into the Singles.  On the day she was supported by her husband and family. Husband Colin turned up trumps with his encouragement as you can see from the photograph.

SI Southport’s Memorable Mile

SI Southport’s Memorable Mile

Regional President Margaret’s Rose Bowl Challenge this year was to ‘Walk a Memorable Mile’ and spread the word about our organisation along the way. SI Southport members decided to walk along iconic Lord Street in Southport (a ‘measured’ mile between the roundabouts), handing out leaflets about Soroptimist International and the work we do. The dress code was predominantly blue – with sashes and ‘Ask Me Why’ t-shirts as the uniform. As this is for the Rose Bowl Challenge, Membership Officer Carol Cookson has submitted a full report, so I attach just a few photos of event. We had a very happy morning of friendship and camaraderie and hopefully passed on in a very public and visible way the wonderful work of SI, not just locally but nationally and internationally.

SI Southport on tour in Champagne

SI Southport on tour in Champagne

Have you ever tried the ancient art of sabrage? Neither had most of a group of 15 Southport Soroptimists, plus husbands and friends until they embarked on a trip to Reims at the end of April.  Sabrage is the ancient art of decapitation (of a bottle of champagne) with a sabre. In total about 25 bottles of champagne were ‘sabraged’ and, in true Soroptimist style, not a lot wasted! Of course, we needed to make best use of the residual champagne, which was disposed of with great efficiency along with a splendid 3 course meal! In total, 3 champagne houses were visited as part of the 4 day tour and there was also time to visit the main sites in the town. The trip was organised by Beata Kowalska of Southport Soroptimists and a merry time was had by all.  We arrived back in Southport, tired but

Wonder Women at Edge Hill University, February 2018

Edge Hill University are celebrating 100 years of women’s right to vote in 2018, and they invited SI Southport to their ‘Wonder Women’ launch event on 6th February, exactly 100 years after some women received the vote. Our stall was set up in Hale Hall with a number of others, including a range of organisations, staff and students linked to women’s rights and campaigning. We had a very productive session, explaining the work of Soroptimist International on local, national and international levels and had a lot of enquiries from women of all ages. This proved to be a really good mechanism for introducing Soroptimism to our local communities and we hope we will have the opportunity to participate in similar events.

Three Clubs Meeting, February 2018

Three Clubs Meeting, February 2018

For many years, the three SI clubs in Sefton – SI Bootle, SI Crosby and SI Southport  – have met for a fun social evening. This is a great opportunity for us to get together in an informal environment to talk about our clubs, renew friendships and make new friends from all three clubs. The evening is hosted by each of the clubs in turn and this year it was Southport’s turn. President Janet decided to have a 60s evening. Emmanuel Church Hall was turned into a dance hall of the 1960s, full of peace and love. Party finger food, including stuffed celery, sausage rolls, grapefruit ‘hedgehogs’ with cheese, onion & pickles and ‘naughty-but-nice’ trifles  were lovingly prepared by our members, together with a fruit punch to quench our thirst. Everyone was invited to come in ‘60s fashion and many members really threw themselves into

SI Southport at Tesco – and not just for shopping!

Southport Soroptimists were flushed with success recently when they donned toilet suits in Tesco in to collect money for WaterAid and local charities. A total or £286 was collected. We were also able to raise awareness of Soroptimism and what we do. We are very grateful to the community team at Tesco for their support and hospitality. WaterAid is President Janet’s charity  A cheque for £500 was sent to the charity from this and other fundraising activities and this will be doubled by the UK government to £1000. SI Southport have already sent a further £500 to WaterAid in response to their Emergency aid appeal for Rohingya refugees in Bangledesh.
